Some thoughts
on the GACA
ali-star games
Twice this week I made the trip
up to Atlanta to see some Perry
kids in the GACA all-star games.
Sy Jones and Tobe Gilbert ap
peared in the baseball game Tuesday
and Tazari Green played in Thurs
day's baskeball games.
While I would hardly place either
trip on my all time top 10 list of
most enjoyable events, they were
both at least interesting in away.
Tuesday I came into the office
early and worked hard so I could
leave for Atlanta in time to make
the 5:30 start of the first of the two
baseball games.
I arrived on the Georgia Tech
campus at about 4:45 and quickly
found a parking spot and headed for
the press box.
By the appointed time, the na
tional anthem had been played, the
players introduced and the game was
ready to begin.
Ten minutes later Mother Nature
had something else to say about
that.
A fierce lightning storm halted
play. Nearly an hour later it started
to rain.
An hour after that, it finally quit
raining. Then after a few more
minutes of taking care of the field,
play resumed almost two hours
after it had been stopped.
When play resumed, the rules
had changed a little bit. Speed-up
rules were in effect, and that meant
a parade of courtesy runners every
time a pitcher or a catcher reached
base.
The games, originally scheduled
for seven innings each, were short
ened to six frames each, no excep
tions.
So, an hour after play resumed,
the sixth inning of the first game
ended with the score knotted at 3-3.
Instead of going to the seventh
inning, the two teams went straight
into the second game.
Nearly two hours later, the
whole ordeal was over. The South
had won the second game by a 4-0
count.
A quick look at my watch said it
was a couple of minutes before 11,
just five and a half hours after the
first pitch.
Two days later, I was preparing
for my return trip to the big city for
the basketball game, only this time
I was to have a travelling parter,
Perry's basketball coach Carl
Thomas.
The boys game, which was the
reason for our trip, was scheduled to
start between 8:30 and 9 p.m., so
we timed our arrival at Tech for
about 8:15.
Instead of finding the clock
winding down on the girls game,
we found the participants in the
halftime slam dunk competition
warming up.
We decided the liming of our ar
rival was pretty good since Green
was one of the finalists in the dunk
ing contest.
Green made both of his at
tempts, making him just one of
three to do so, but he finished on
back in the pack.
Cedar Shoals’ Carlos Strong and
Manchester's Darrell Dunham were
the obvious top two contenders un
til Strong botched his second at
tempt.
Trying to leap over four assis
tants standing in the lane, Strong
made the jump, but missed the
dunk.
Dunham followed on his second
attempt by clearing three assistants
and throwing down a twisting dunk.
By 9:45, the boys game was fi
nally set to start. With 15:21 to
play in the first half, we finally got
to see what we were waiting for.
Green checked into the game,
and 16 seconds later he had made a
real impact.
Strong, who is headed to
Geogia, went up for a short shot.
Green went up too. Green met the
ball before Strong could get the
shot off, and the officials signaled
jump ball.

South claims one win, one tie
in GACA all-star baseball game
By COSBY WOODRUFF

Overcoming both the elements
and some hot North bats, the South
team managed to salvage a 4-0 win
in the second game of the GACA
North-South baseball all-star dou
ble-header.
The first game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Perry's two representatives in the
game, second baseman Toriano Gi
blcrt and catcher Sy Jones, were
both largely ineffective on offense,
but both had solid days on defense.
Gilbert was involved in a double
play in the first game and finished
with one put out and two assists. In
the second game, he had one assist
and two putouts.
His final putout came when he
tagged out Ryan Ritter trying to
steal second, taking the throw from
Jones.
Jones had a passed ball in the
first game, but in the second game
he managed two good throws to
erase runners.
In addition to cutting down Rit
ter stealing, he forced Chan English
at third after fielding a chopper in
front of the plate.
His only mistake was a passed
ball in the bottom of the second in
ning of the first game.
On offense, the only bright spot
for the two came in the top of the

The strength of the North's in
side game was enough to give them
a 92-87 win in the GACA North-
South basketball game Thursday at
Georgia Tech.
Paced by Carlos Strong, a 6'-8"
Cedar Shoals graduate and Univer
sity of Georgia signee, the North
dominated the play in the paint.
Strong scored a game-high 25
points, 15 in the second half.
Another Georgia signee, Pertha
Robinson from Dougherty, led the
South with 24 points, half of them
coming on three-point bombs.
Perry's representative in the
game, Tazari Green, scored two
points for the South in a dozen
minutes of playing time.
"Tazari hustled and stayed after
it," Perry coach Carl Thomas said
after the game. "He was setting the
screen rather than receiving the
screen, so he played much of the
game without the ball."
Highlights of Green's time on
the floor included forcing a jump
ball on a shot attempt by Strong

Westfield 1992 softball schedule set
By COSBY WOODRUFF

The Westfield Lady Hornet soft
ball team recently released their
1992 schedule, a slate which
includes one major change over
previous years.
Instead of Westfield opening the
season in the Windsor Tournament,
third inning of the first game when
Gilbert walked, went to second on
Kelly Kingston's single and then
third on Brian Johnson's walk.
He then came on to score when
Mike Hall ripped a two-run single.
Gilbert has also walked and
stolen a base in the top of the first,
but he was stranded at second.
Hall's hit tied the game at 2-2,
but the North went ahead 3-2 in the
bottom of the inning.
The final run of the first game
crossed in the top of the fourth
when Fred Edmonds tripled and
scored on Kevin Wildes’ sacrifice
fly.
After six innings, the game was
called a 3-3 tic. Extra innings were
not allowed because of a rain-delay
that lasted nearly two hours in the
bottom of the first inning.
Both games were shortened to
three innings by the delay.
For the game in the opener, the
North out-hit the South 11-4, but
the South managed to keep them
from turning the game into an early
rout.
In the bottom of the second, the
North had two doubles, two singles
and a walk, but the double play
kept them from scoring more than
the two runs they collected.

He scored his basket on a spin

to go in the first half, giving the
South a 33-30 edge.
Foul trouble kept Green on the
bench for much of the second half
as he picked up his third and fourth
fouls just 30 seconds apart in the
second half.
The North's Shannon Anderson
and Derrick Parker made three of
four free throws following Green's
fouls to break a 49-49 tie and give
the North the lead for good.
The game itself hinged on a
series of streaks which saw both
teams build, and then lose, sizeable
leads.
The North led 9-4 early, but they
went nearly seven minutes without
scoring a field goal as the South
took a 21-13 lead.
The South's lead was short-lived
as the North scored 10 in a row set
ting up a brief sparring match.
Green's basket gave the South a
33-30 lead with 3:35 to go, but the
North out-scored them 11-4 before
the half to make it 41-37 at inter
mission.

Early in the second half, South

make a move for the South. He
scored eight points in the first 5:30
of the second half to give the South
a 49-45 lead, but the South soon
hit an extended scoring drought that
let the North lay claim to larger and
larger leads.
From the 14:30 mark until just
9:57 remained, the South did not
hit a field goal as the North took a

The lead reached 10 for the first

With five minutes to play, the

the game into a rout.
Pertha Robinson hit a three
