Seminole - The lake is down a foot and somewhat dingy. The
best bet is to try a floating bait to try to pull a bass out of the grass.
The weather has put a damper on some fishing with the almost
daily rains.
- Reported by Wingate Lunker’s Lodge
Blackshear - Down several inches and slightly stained. The
bream have quit taking worms and are taking crickets now
instead. Bass fishing is improving and some larger fish are being
reported. Catfish are also biting.
- Reported by Marian Stewart, Camper’s Haven
Sinclair - Sinclair is at normal level and clairity, clear on the lower
end butdingy up in the lake. Bass fishing remains good to
excellent. Most fish are in deeper water, but they are taking a
variety of baits. Good catches have been reported on blue plastic
baits and various crankbaits. Crappie fishing ranges from slow to
fair. A few fish are biting minnows at night under lights. Catfish
are still biting well
- Reported by Glen Cowell, Little River Park
Jackson - wake is at normal level and clear. Fising overall is
slow to fair. Some huge bass have been reported, but most
catches have been small. Plastic baits in the shallows seem to be
working well. Crappie fishing is a little better, but it is still slow.
- Reported by Van Kersey, Kersey's Marina
West Point - The lake is down a foot and clear. Bass fishing
remains good. Most fish are fairly deep, in up to 25 feetof water,
so it requres some work. Try a diving crankbait or fish a plastic bait
on the bottom. Hybrids are schooling and hitting top-water baits.
Panfishing is generally slow
- Reported by Highland Marina
Eufala - Water level is down more than a foot and it is clear.
Bass fishing is very good in some spots. Worms and some
crankbaits are catching fish in the main channell. Brem fishing is
fair with crickets near cover. Crappie fishing is also fair.

State game agency stocking
stripers into West Point now
The Georgia Game and Fish
Division and U.S. Fish and
Reservoir recently stocked 170,000
one-inch bass fingerlings in West
Point Reservoir in order to evaluate
striped bass as potential addition to
the already superb fish community
in the lake.
The fingerlings were produced at
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
hatchery in Welakca, Florida from
brood fish collected in the
Apalachicola River.
In the coming months,
biologists will evaluate the striped
bass population to determine
whether the fish is a suitable
addition for West Point Reservoir.
In order to be considered a
successful addition to the West
Point sport fishery, striped bass
must demonstrate survival and
growth rates at least as good as
those of hybrids in the lake.
Striped bass hybrids have been
stocked into West Point for several
years and an outstanding fishery has
developed for this species. Hybrids
commonly reach weights of up to
15 pounds and are relatively easily
harvested by anglers. Since the two
species arc similar, biologists will
look for striped bass to exceed the
potential sport qualities of hybrids
in order for stocking to continue.
Biologists will also be looking
at striped bass predation of trout
below Buford Dam. Striped bass
tend to aggregate in cooler waters
during the summer, such as the area
Four-wheelers not for kids,
bungee jumping is for none
it has always amazed me that
people can find so many ways to
voluntarily hurt themselves. The
recent publicity over bungee
jumping has really brought this to
mind.
One of my close personal friends
told me last week that he had tried
the jump. I immediately told him
that anyone who jumps from a
tower several hundred feet high with
a rubber band to arrest his fall has
got to have a marble loose. He of
course, reminded me that we hunt
wild boar every weekend and that
this was not the safest sport.
There is a vehicle used in the
out of doors that is far more
dangerous than either bungee
jumping or boar hunting, yet adults

below the Buford Dam. If the
striped bass and trout accumulate in
the same area and it is determined
that the bass eat a large number of
trout, the striped bass stocking
program could potentially be
discontinued.
Also the Game ad Fish Division
personnel stocked 211,404 striped x
white bass hybrids into Lake
Blackshcar during May. These one
inch long hybrids were raised at
Bowens Mill Hatchery, Fitzgerald.
During the late 1970'5, the
Game and Fish Division began
stocking striped x white bass
hybrids into Lake Blackshcar
annually to provide fishing
opportunities for anglers. In 1992,
Game and Fish stocked 85,292
striped bass hybrids in Lake
Blackshcar at rate of 10 fish per
acre. This year, the number was
increased to 25 fish per acre.
Each year, biologists sample the
fish population in Lake Blackshcar
to determine the rate at which
hybrids should be stocked. The
stocking rate is based on several

DOVE SEASON OPENS
SOON
- The Georgia dove season
opens on September 5, so it's time
to get prepared.
Cherokee Rose Shooting Resort
in Griffin, Georgia will host the
First Annual Georgia Dovehunter’s
Classic on August 8, 1992
beginning at 10 a.m. Designed to
be a fun shoot to serve as both a
warmup for the Georgia Dove
hunting season and a chance for
hunters to mix and mingle, this
event will give shooters an
opportunity to get in some
meaningful practice before the
season opens.
The format for the event
consists of 100 total targets shot
through three different shotgun
games. Each shooter will fire away
at 50 sporting clay targets, 25
targets on the exciting Dove
Towers, where targets fly overhead
just like in a dovefield, and 25
targets on the 5-Stand Sporting
percent of the victims are children.
A person who would not think
of letting his 10 year old jump
from a bungee platform or go boar
hunting with me will buy this
machine as a toy.
A national safety group has said
that children under 16 should not
ride ATVs because they lack the
developmental skills and maturity
needed to operate the vehicles
safely.
Tragically, parents mistakenly
believe that ATVs are safe for their
chidlrcn. The ATX looks and feels
so stable that buyers assume that it
is. Even though ATVs are now
required to have warning labels, the
dealers often discount these warning
and tell parents that the ATV is safe
other license dealers.
Trout fishermen can also use the
one day license, but they will need
to buy a trout stamp, which is
available to slate residents for $5.
"The one day fishing license is
great for first time and occasional
anglers and for people who want to
try fishing on one of Georgia's
hunters and campers can help save
wildlife habitats from the threat of
forest fires.
Galen Shinkle, trick archer, will
put on a bow shooting exhibition
at the show and give advice on
hunting with a bow.
Margaret Hice, co-founder of
Women Hunters Organization of
America, will speak on tree stand
hunting safety. She will give advice
on protection from insects,
game which features targets from
virtually every angle.
Scoring will be done using the
Lewis Class system, which gives
every shooter an equal opportunity
to win a prize regardless of his
score. There will be numerous
prizes awarded, all donated by area
sporting goods dealers and outdoor
industry manufacturers. Some lucky
shooter will win the Grand Prize, a
12-gauge shotgun just for attending
the event.
"This event is not just for the
tournament shooter. It's for all
shooters and hunters who want to
have some exciting fun and have a
chance to win some great prizes,"
said Marty Fischer, Cherokee Rose
Vice President of Marketing. "There
is no better place to get warmed up
for the dove season than Cherokee
Rose," he said," and everyone who
is planning to do a little bird
hunting this season needs to shoot
before going into the field. This
event gives them that opportunity."
Entry fee for the days shooting
will be SSO per shooter. Each
participant is responsible for his
own ammunition. No shot size
larger than 7 1/2 is allowed at
Cherokee Rose, so 7 1/2. 8 or 9
shot is required. Reloads are
permitted and factory ammunition
is available by the box or case at
Cherokee Rose.
