i Crossroads United Methodist
Church has been quite busy this
week with Vacation Bible School,
but according to their schedule,
there’s always something going on
with the congregation.
Philip Thomason, the pastor for
the past four years, explained that
members of his congregation in
volve themselves in many activi
ties. Next week, some members
will be attending Camp Dooly
where South Georgia’s Bishop
Richard C. Looney of Macon. On
August 4, the church is planning a
blood drive.
iy The church was founded 25 years
5 . ago by a segment of members from
Perry United Methodist Church on
Main Street. Despite the specula
tion that this separation resulted
from disagreements within the orig
inal church, Thomason assures
there was no problem.
“The split probably came from
some higher authorities within the
y church who saw a need for more
than one Methodist church in Perry,
but there was no quarrel whatso
ever,” Thomason said.
Thomason sees Crossroads
church as more of a “neighborhood”
church than Perry United Methodist
which he feels may be a bit more
“established.”

congregation. A large number of

Crossroads United Methodist Church considers itself a
neighborhood church and feels that people are comfortable to
come here and worship Christ.
our congregation moves in with the
big businesses and the base,”
Thomason explained. Despite this
“transience,” Crossroads still main
tains some of its charter members.
There arc currently 286 members
in the congregation which is a big
jump from its original number of
108 pioneer members. During the
church's upcoming 25th anniver
sary, the church is going to make
an effort to locate some of its past
members who they have lost con
tact with due to re-location.
“We arc a church that welcomes
new members with welcome arms.
We’re a relatively young congrega
tion, but wc’rc a congregation that
is here to share Christ at the
Crossroads,” Thomason said.
“Sharing Christ at the Crossroads”
is the theme saying of the church

As stated before, Thomason has
been at Crossroads for four years.
Originally, Thomason received his
degree in mental retardation from
Georgia Southern. He worked
within the field in Atlanta for sev
eral years, but after becoming in
volved in a local church, he realized
that he was meant for another ca
reer.
“I realized that God had called me
into something more than what 1
was doing, and it went from there.
It was an evolution.” Thomason
said.
He did admit that his previous
career has helped him deliver his
ministerial services. He feels that
he is more understanding of human
nature and can really feel how peo

Thomason then went to Candler
School of Theology at Emory
University for his Masters in divin
ity.
The youth program at the church
is directed by his wife Lathcl. The
program meets every Sunday after
noon but, according to Thomason,
they are actively involved in so
many programs that they are con
stantly on the go. There are cur
rently 25 youths from the seventh
through 12th grade who are actively
involved in the Adopt-a -Highway
program and work with the P.A.C.
program that gives food and toys to
needy families at Christmas.
Not only does Crossroads have a
continuously active congregation,
but they will be even more busy
due to some new construction being
done to the side of the church.
Construction begins in two weeks.
The addition will include new
rooms for Sunday school, offices,
choir and new restrooms. The
money came from congregations
donations and two gifts given to the
church from various groups. The
project will cost around $155,000.
“We’ve had a lot of people in
our church work hard to oversee
this project, especially John Houser
and the trustees,” Thomason said.
Thomason is especially thankful
because he feels the church desper
ately needed the Sunday school
space and choir space.
“The congregation has grown so
much that we arc needing to catch
up with the growth."
