I filled out a resume like all the
other candidates and as of Thursday,
1 learned 1 had the job. I was very
excited. Gerry, the new girl who
has been hired is great. She picks
up things so fast, I know she'll
work out well," Kersey said.
Included among the center's visi
tors in recent months arc a busload
of English teachers from Germany,
a missionary from Zambia, several
other Europeans and guests from
every corner of the United States.
They browse the wall of brochures
which highlight features from all
over the state, from Atlanta to Sa
vannah, or from the New Perry
Hotel to the Antique Trail.
According to Kersey most visitors
pick up at least one brochure during
their stop and often change their
itinerary as a result of information
they have discovered.
"People are usually coming or
going from Florida. They sec our
sign, stop for a look and a lot of
them end up visiting areas high
lighted in the brochures. Until I
started working here, 1 never real
ized there were so many things to
do in Georgia. We can handle just
about any information request peo
ple have, whether it's and attraction,
a city or directions we can find what
they need," Kersey said.

"They tend to be very cautious
about giving permission to use
sludge. If there is opposition they
generally will not grant permission
for use," Walker said.
Walker estimated Perry generates
about 40 tons of sludge a year.
Currently, Perry takes all of its
sludge to the County Landfill.
Tipping fees at the landfill arc 535
a ton.
Hay pointed to Tifton as an ex
ample of a city that has been using
sludge for fertilizer for at least 10
years.
"Our sludge has no heavy metals
in it and die run-off water is clearer
than the creek water. I can't under
stand what the EPD opposition is
based on," Hay said.
Past requests by the city to dis
tribute sludge to residents for gar
dening have been denied by the
EPD.

Hawkinsville, Kersey went to work
for Kalco East, a residential light
ing fixture manufacturer. She
worked at Kalco from May 1984
until June 1991, when she left to
have a baby.
In October of 1991, she was
hired as a permanent part-time
hostess at the Welcome Center.
"I wanted to get out of the house
and make a little extra money. I
had never worked at a place like this
and I loved it. I'm a good talker and
the job requires that. Right after I
started, Christmas at the Crossroads
had their art show at the center and I
really enjoyed working on that,"
Kersey said.
Kersey was born in New Jersey
and raised in Unadilla. She married
Chris Kersey in 1988 and the cou
ple lives with their one year old
daughter, Morgan, in Henderson.
Kersey said the Welcome Center
draws praise from visitors near and
far.
"People from all over tell me
this is the nicest visitor center
they've ever seen. And we're start
ing to get more and more local
people coming out to sec what
we're doing out here. They all®

It shouldn't be used for anything
that isn't cooked before it is eaten,"
Walker said.
Perry has been directed by the
EPD to bring all of its sludge to
the county landfill, but if Macon is
successful in its bid to bring the
sludge into Houston County, then
city officials arc likely to make an
other request for alternatives uses
for the sludge.

The commission also continued
discussion on the proposed fringe
area study. At their next meeting
they will begin identifying areas
and outlining objectives they would
like to see covered in the study.
The Regional Development Cen

providing funds arc made available
by the city council and possibly
Houston County.
"We want to determine the areas

associated with each area. We want

governing that would make it that

said.

can handle any situation and make
it believable and they do.
The movie is rated PG for some
mild violence.
"Honey, 1 Blew Up The Kid" is
not quite as good as "Honey, 1
Shrunk The Kids." For one thing
the newness of the situation is
gone, and secondly the situation it
self isn't as enthralling. But a tal
ented cast, some super special ef
fects, and a touch of family love
makes this movie for the whole
family to savor.
I scored "Honey, I Blew Up The
Kid” a gigantic 6 out of 10.

Tournament play begins this week
end. In addition to the gift package,
Griffin will be carrying information
about Perry to be given to the pres
ident of the USSSA. The informa
tion is designed to elicit interest on
the part of the USSSA in building
a large softball complex in Perry.
"It would really help our ability
to generate interest in building a
complex if the softball association
was behind the idea," Worrall said.
Discussion on building the
complex began at the city council
goal setting sessions in May. One
of the proposed sites for the facility
is in the area around the Agriccnter.
Griffin is looking forward to her
role as ambassador.
