Wisdom teeth can sometimes be beneficial
I walked into a room Sunday
while getting ready for ehurch and
my three year old son was
"helping" my one year old son
brush his teeth. It was difficult to
tell whether it was oral hygiene or
an act of violence. As I walked in, I

Preparing
schools for
diabetic
children
Even though it's still summer,
it's time to start thinking about the
upcoming school year. Informing
teachers, coaches and other school
officials about your child's diabetes
can help make this school year a
success.
First, write down all the
important information about your
child's food, insulin and excercise in
a concise, casy-to-rcad form. Give a
copy to the school nurse, principal,
all your teachers, aides, coaches and
even the school cafeteria manager.
Meet with them before school starts
to be sure they understand all the
information. Emphasize that
diabetes management should be part
of your child's regular day, and that
it should cause as little change in
the normal school routine as
possible.
Explain blood sugar goals.
Discuss when blood glucose
monitoring should be done and
where the child will be comfortable
doing it. Decide whether insulin
will be needed during the day, how
much will be needed and who
should give it.
Explain the meal plan, especially
if the child will cat a lunch provided
by the school. List good snacks.
Discuss when and if snacks will be
needed.
Give guidelines for dealing with
excercise and other strenuous
activity. Children can become so
involved in an event that they fail
to notice symptoms of
hypogloccmia. Coaches and friends
need to know how to identify and
treat these symptoms. Give
guidelines for when not to allow
exercise (such as when the blood
sugar is 100 high.)
Most important, provide a
complete list of emergency
numbers, including all your child's
doctors and someone who can take
responsibility for your child if you
are not available.
Your child needs to wear diabetes
identification. Although no one
likes being labeled with a disease,
this ID may mean the difference
between treatment if a diabetes
problem occurs. Diabetes
identification could save your
child's life when you arc not there.
Keep the school informed about
changes in your child's care during
the year. Encoragc your child to
participate in these discussions. Os
course, as children get older, they
can take over more of this
discussion. With open
communication and careful
instruction, diabetes should be a
minor part of the overall life of
your child at school.

moss off.” Experts say parents
should supervise their children's
brushing until the child is seven.
Easy to see why.
You may know that there are 32
teeth in the adult dentition. This, of
course, includes four wisdom teeth.
The average adult does not have ad
equate space in the jaws to accom
modate these late-erupting teeth. It
is for this reason that wisdom teeth
often cause problems.
The normal time for eruption of
wisdom teeth is when an individual

is 18 to 25 years of age. If there is
room enough in the jaws these
teeth can erupt into fully function
ing members of the healthy denti
tion. If there is inadequate space a
number of things may occur.
1. The teeth may partially erupt.
This means that a small flap of
gum tissue overlies part of the wis
dom tooth. It can be a trap for bac
teria or source of toothache if the
upper wisdom tooth is biting down
on it.
2. The teeth may come in
crooked. This usually results in an
individual biting their checks when
chewing. It is also more difficult to
keep the teeth clean which could re
sult in bad breath or tooth decay.

3. The teeth may be impacted.
Impacted simply means trapped by
bone or by another tooth. Quite
often this poses no problem. I have
seen x-rays of people in their 50s
and 60s with impacted wisdom
teeth causing no damage. I have
also seen teeth ruined by having a
wisdom tooth growing into its
root. Some dentists say that an im
pacted wisdom tooth may con
tribute to crowding of the front
teeth.
Are wisdom teeth always bad?
Journal
Certainly not. For a person who is
missing several teeth, a wisdom
tooth may help support a bridge or
partial denture. For people with ad
equate space, wisdom teeth can be
as functional as any other teeth.
Because they are so far back in
the mouth, they are difficult to
maintain plaque-free. Have your
dentist help you evaluate whether
your wisdom teeth arc an asset or a
liability.
One last thing. Why on earth do
they call them wisdom teeth?
