Seminole - The lake is still at normal level, and the fishing has
moved solidly into a fall pattern now. Some bass are hitting top
water lures in and around weed beds. Panfish are also biting
some.
- Reported by Wingate Lunker’s Lodge
Blackshear - The lake is on its way down as it is being lowered
to allow for work ondocks and seawalls. Caution is encouraged
on the lake because of the lower water level. Catfishing is fair,
everything else is poor.
- Reported by Bob Kelly, Camper's Haven
Sinclair- Water level is still down nearly half a dozen feet and it
will start filing early next week. Fishing is off because few people
are out on the lake. Most marinas and boat ramps are closed.
Caution is urged on the lake.
- Reported by Glenn Colwell, Little River Park
Jackson - Water level is at normal level and slightly stained.
F ishing here might be the best in the mid-state right now. Bass
are hitting a little bit of everything, and panfish are biting also. Try
minnows at night for crappie or pink worms for shellcrackers.
- Reported by Van Kersey, Kersey's Marina
West Point - Water level is down about one foot and clear.
Bass are in fairly shallow water and are active on top-water lures.
The schools of hybrids have moved to the lower end of the lake
where they are also hitting top-water lures. Crappie are back in
coves where they are hitting jigs with white mixed in with brighter
colors.
- Reported by Highland Marina
Eufuala - Water level is down about three feet with some slight
stain. Fishing is off a little. Try crankbaits near the top end of the
lake for best results. Some hybrids are still schooling early and
late and taking spinners, top-waters and spoons. Crappie fishing
is fair to good at night on minnows and over trees with jigs and

Black powder can add new
dimension to big game hunts
For the second year, Oaky Woods
will host a black powder hunt on
Oct. 22-24, so if you've got the
itch to get the jump on the regular
firearms season which opens on
Oct. 24th, this may be your chance.
Both Oaky Woods and Ocmulgcc
Wildlife Management Areas held
dove hunts on Oct. 16-17 so the
deer will be well-educated to the
habits of hunters. As a bonus, any
deer taken on the black powder hunt
will not count against a hunters
five deer tags.
The black powder hunt is not a
quota hunt but hunters must check
in if you haven’t hunted on Oaky
Woods recently. You may not
recognize it as much of die land has
been cut cover, but hunting success
will continue to be good on the
area. Oaky Woods has a substantial
population of feral hogs which may
be hunted during the primitive
weapons season.
Primitive weapons are defined as
long bows, compound bows,
muzzle-loading shotguns of 20-
gaugc or larger loaders with a single
shot and muzzle-loading rifles of
.44 caliber or larger with iron
sights. The .50-caliber rifle seems
to be the most popular caliber in
use today.
If you don’t have a black-powder
rillc, one can be purchased either in
kit form or as a completed firearm.
The firearms are also available as
percussion-cap or flintlock models,
but the cap style is more dependable
and easier to use.
It's a lot of fun to build your
own, and it only takes a minimum
of woodworking skill. I've built

The elections are just around the
corner and the national news media
in their infinite wisdom have just
about decided who should be the
winner.
It seems that the reporters and
commentators, especially of the TV
media, think that the American
people arc not smart enough to
understand what the candidates have
said and stand for. I am tired of
hearing these self "experts" expound
for an hour on what they think die
candidates have said after a debate.
1 wrote an article several weeks
ago concerning our state political
candidates and their stand on
hunting and gun ownership. Several
people have asked me to write
about the national candidates and
their stance on these issues. At the
risk of sounding like the national
media, I am going to give my
thoughts on these issues. They arc
w orth just what they cost the reader
- nothing!
I have usually been a little more
moderate than the National Ride
Association (NRA) on their
stances, but I am going to use
some of their statistics in this
article.
The NRA rates politicians from
A+ to F to show their positions on
issues of concern to all law-abiding
gun owners including hunting,
firearms possession, self-defense,
and the Second Amendment.
The Democratic candidate for the
US Senate, Wyche Fowler, rated an
F. This F rating shows the
candidate as favoring restrictive
legislation such as banning
handguns, other firearms or
hunting, actively opposes the
NRA. His opposition, Paul
Coverdcll, received an A rating.
This rating shows him to be solidly
pro-gun/pro hunting, opposed to
additional controls on firearms or
legislation restricting hunting and
would vote for pro-gun reform
legislation.
Bill Clinton was not as easy to
pin down in the Presidential race.
He has changed his position so
many times to fit the particular
group that he was addressing that it
is hard to decide what he is for or
against.
Speaking to gun owners and
farmers in lowa this summer,
Clinton said he really wasn't
impressed with waiting periods.
Instead, he favored the NRA-backcd

two rifles from kits, one was a
C.V.A..45-caliber Kentucky rifle
and the other is my current hunting
rifle, a .50 -caliber
Thompson/Centcr Hawkcn rifle.
The "Kentucky rifle" has a long 36-
inch barrcll and was actually
developed in Pennsylvania. It was
the rifle that got the most use
during the development of our
county. The Hawkcn rifle,
developed in St. Louis, was made
primarily as a "plains ride" for use
in buffalo. By the time the Hawkcn
rifle appeared on the scene in the
1880’s, the black-powder ride was
on the decline and firearms that used
the "new" blackpowdcr cartridge
were becoming popular.
If you're going to build a ride
from a kit, I’d recommend the
Thompson/Centcr "Hawkcn or
Renegade" percussion rifle in .50
caliber. This rifle is made in
America of quality materials and
comes with good, adjustable sights.
It's about 95 percent finished and is
fairly easy for a beginner to out
together. The barrcll is not blued
but this job be done with any of
commercially available cold blueing
solutions. Before you apply the
blueing, make sure you use a dc
greaser on the barrcll. This is the

check. But only hours beforehand,
s])caking to inner-city residents in
St. Louis, he said he was impressed
with a wailing period, but it wasn't
restrictive enough. His goal? Not
instant check, but "some of those
gun buyout programs that arc
starting around the country."
In June of 1992, Clinton joined
Senators Ted Kennedy,. Howard
Mct'/.cnbaum and John Chaffee and
Congressman Pete Stark, Marty
Ru/.zo and Charles Schmer - all
authors and sponsors of legislation
to ban anti confiscate guns - to co
host a fund raising event for the
propoganda arm of Hangun
Control, Inc.
Clinton also claims to be a
hunter. NRA put the following

secret of success. Fombeys makes
a wood finish called Tru-oil which
turns out an excellent rifle-stock
finish, very durable.
Once you get your muz/.lcloader,
don't rush out and shoot it until
you have done a good bit of reading
on the subject. Many magazines
and books have been written on
black-powder hunting. Your first
decision is whether to use black
powder and pyrodex, a black powder
substitute. The pyrodex is safer in
normal use, is less corrosive and
less fouling. But is docs require, a
hotter spark and more
compressions, so it’s lough to use
in shotguns and almost impossible
in flintlocks. 1 bought one can of
black powder years ago and I'm still
using it. When my black powder's
gone. I'm switching to pyrodex.
Muzzlcloadcrs argue about which
projectile is better a round ball or a
maxi-ball, but really, both have
their places. The patched, round ball
is still favored by those hunters
who want to use authentic and
traditional loads. The round ball
was used until the Civil War, then
the mini-ball (a thrcc-fourths-inch
concial slug with a hollow base
became the preferred projectile. The
reason for the change is easy to
understand.
A .50-caliber muzzleloadcr stoked
with 80 grains of FFFG powder
under a patched round weighing 180
grains will leave the barrel about
1,800 feet per second and deliver
about 430 foot pounds of energy at
1 (X) yards.
In comparison, a .50-caliber
concial maxi-ball weighing 370

grains in front of the same load 80
grains of powder, has a velocity of
1,400 feet per second and hits with
almost 800 foot-pounds of energy
at 100 yards. The maxi-ball has
about 370 more foot pounds of
energy than the round ball at 100
yards, quite a difference in
effectiveness.
There are several ways you can
get into trouble shooting a
muzzleloadcr. Rasic safety rules are
1) never smoke around black
powder, 2) no loading from a
storage container, 3) never charge a
capped or printed gun. Load first,
then put on the percussion cap, 4)
always make sure the lead bullet is
firmly seated on the powder charge.
Leaving an air gap between the
powder charge and bullet transforms
your gun into a pipe bomb.
It's easy to do by mistake when
your bore is fouled. It's easy to
avoid, too, by marketing your
ramrod even with the muzzier when
it's sitting on a properly loaded
charge and bullet, and 5) one final
word of caution - don't dress up in
buckskins or any type of fur hat.
Sure, it's nostalgic, but some jerk
may think you're a deer. (Make sure
you wear flourcscent orange while
hunting.)
Black-powder hunting s very
interesting bccauc it captures "a bit
of yesteryear" and I encourage you
to try litis challenging sport.
Oaky Woods is also hosting a
adult/child hunt on Nov. 27-28.
This is not a quota hunt but you
must sign in. Participation in this
hunt is low so if you've ever
