Bulldogs would hold up until the
waning moments of the third
quarter. George Walton scored their
final points on a 22-yard pass from
McGuffcy to Miller, and the same
duo connected for the extra point to
make it 20-0.
Any hopes the Bulldog coaching
staff had of getting the ball back
and running out the clock was gone
just 14 seconds later. That is how
long it took Brad Dchcm to field
the kick at his own 20-yard line.
He stopped running 80 yards
later when he had the Hornets on
the scoreboard and back into the
game. Westfield failed on a
convention, and they trailed 20-6.
The two teams traded
possessions until just over eight
minutes remained the in game.
At that point, the Hornets made
a serious bid to actually catch the
Bulldogs.
Starting from their own 24-yard
line, Westfield moved steadily
downficld on Perfect's arm, but at
the same time they moved back
about every other play because of a
penalty.
He connected with John Shipley
for 16 yards, with Matt Sheplcy for
44 and then for 16 yards. And then
moments later he hit Dehem with a
screen pass, and Westfield's shifty
runner turned it into a 30-yard
scoring toss.
A penalty erased a two-point
conversion, and Lon Talton made
what ammounted to a 35-yard extra
point to cut the lead to 20-13.
Again George Walton tried to
run out the clock, mostly by just
giving the ball to Miller, but with
2:17 to go Brad Dchcm stepped up
Bush is also an avid hunter whose
pursuit of game has attracted the
protest of animal rights extremists.
I was fortunate to be invited to a
luncheon with Bush just after he
was elected President for a
discussion of conversation and
preservation of wildlife. He came
across to be on a personal basis, a
person who is very much interested
ion our wildlife, the right to hunt
and to own forearms.
1 have said many times that a
person should not allow one issue
to decide how they will vote for a
political candidate, but the gun
owner and hunter should take a
strong look at the stance of the
politicians on these issues.
and picked off a pass to set the
Hornets up with a chance to score
to tie or take the lead.
And for a moment it appeared
they would do just that. Perfect,
who passed for more than 200 yards
for the third time this year,
scrambled for 8, then passed to
Talton for 28.
Later, he connected with Shipley
for 18 and then Dchcm for 13 as the
Hornets executed their hurry-up
offense.
The 13-yardcr to Dchcm moved
the ball to the George Walton 18,
but on the next play Perfect was hit
from behind, lost the ball and the
Bulldogs recovered.
Two plays later the game ended.
The loss dropped Westfield to 3-
5 overall adn 1-1 in the region.
