Weems,
from 1A
"His primary goal has always
been quality health care for the pa
tients in Perry. He has been a
strong supporter of Perry Hospital
and without his presence the last 20
some years the hospital might not
have survived," Peak said.
The Perry Hospital medical staff
voted at their September meeting to
approve the dedication. The staff
also paid for two bronze plaques.
One plaque was placed on the wall
outside the emergency room door
and a copy of the bronze plaque was
presented to Weems Thursday
morning.
Houston County Hospital Author
ity Chairman Pete Rucker credited
Weems for always speaking his
mind to the benefit of his patients.
"Dr. Weems and Perry Hospital
seem to go together, he established
this hospital. He has been a little
bit outspoken on what he thinks is
right and sometimes there were dis
agreements but the real winners
were the hospital and the people of
this area. On behalf of the Houston
County Hospital Authority, 1 salute
him for his many contributions to
the hospital and people of this
area," Rucker said.
Hugh Beatty, a long-time friend
of Weems, summed up the attitude
of the crowd Thursday morning.
"There would not have been a
Perry Hospital had it not been for
him. Anybody who knows him
knows he would break his neck for
his patients and I couldn't have a
better friend in the world. Tricking
him is the only way we could have
got him to come to this. He
doesn't like being highlighted,"
Beatty said.
Police,
from 1A
The theft on Elko Road occured
late Saturday or early Sunday morn
ing. The back door was forced open
and a battery charger and some Bud
weiser were reported stolen.
Hardy offered potential victims
and residents this advice, "If you see
anything, call the police. Don't go
out and confront the folks yourself;
call the cops, that's what you pay
us for."

press conference with Perot this
week. Members of the press were
asking him questions about hearsay
and his personal life and, bless his
heart, he just flat-out told them
they did not need to know about it
and he was here to talk about issues
and then spent most of the time do
ing so. Go ahead Ross!
As I said before, even though it is
unlikely he'll win, one thing is for
sure, he's opened America's eyes a
little wider and pretty much backed
both of the established parties into
a corner they've had to fight their
way out of to prove themselves to
the public. Thanks, Ross.

Fowler also acquired a small
amount of space in a recent
Newsweek. On the page of "quotes
overheard” (which is really a great
form of informing entertainment)
Wyche supposedly told a young
group of volunteers he wasn't going
to kiss their a#s@s because young
people didn't vote anyway. Real
smooth. Os course Fowler denies it,
but the group insists it's true.

Kerce, from 4 a
change in how transportation is
funded.
Currently, gasoline tax revenues
can be spent only for roads, bridges
and highways. This restriction is
out of date, because it excludes
important forms of transportation
in the future such as rail, air, water
and mass transit.
Question 5 would allow tax
revenues above the current 7.5 cents
per gallon on fuel to be used for
any transportation purpose, not just
roads and bridges.
With a recent change in the federal
transportation act that favors
alternatives to highway
construction, it is important for the
state to have new funding
flexibility to take advantage of
federal funds.
A "yes" vote would give Georgia
that flexibility.
Amendments 6 and 7
These two amendments, covering
laws regulating private vehicle
companies can end franchise
agreements with Georgia dealers and
tax loopholes on out-of-state heavy
equipment used in the state, sound
like special interest amendments.
Since there are already ways to
deal with these matters, I see no
reason to get the state involved
through passage of another law.
A "no" would keep two seemingly
unnecessary laws off the books.
Amendment 8
This measure appears to give
citizens a greater voice in the
passage of local bills in the General
Assembly. It would be nice to have
a constitution that doesn't require
local bills to be passed at the state
level when they only affect local
political subdivisions.
A "yes" vote would give us the
