Oct. report
The Georgia State Patrol at Perry
announced today that 14 traffic
accidents in Houston County were
investigated during the month of
October, llic.se accidents resulted in
seven injuries and no deaths.
In the area of enforcement by
Post 15, Sergeant First Class K.W.
Hancock said his officers had made
392 arrests and issued 234 warnings
during the month.
Various courts in Houston
County disposed of 586 pending
traffic cases during the month with
the following: 392 guilty pleas,
173 bond lorfeitures, five cases dis
missed and no cases no record and
16 nolo contendrc pleas. Sergeant
Hancock explained that cases and
arrests would seldom be the same
number for each month because
some cases arc carried over into the
next month to coincide with court
dates.

Library
needs
volunteers
Those who arc interested in serv
ing as volunteer workers at Perry
Public Library will meet at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the library,
1201 Washington Street.
Mrs. Nancy Arcos, librarian, will
give instructions about assisting li
brarians with clerical work, typing,
filing, taking telephone calls and
other duties.

Students vote in mock election
Fifth through 12th grade students
, cast their votes in a mock election
Monday at 22 Houston County
schools. The students elected Bill
Clinton president with 47.81 per
cent of the vote. Ross Perot placed
second with 27.47 percent of the
vote and George Bush placed third
with 24.47 percent.
Students were also asked to ex
press their opinions on a variety of
topical issues.
When polled as to whether the
federal government should guarantee
health insurance to all working
Americans, or not guarantee cover
age but provide assistance through
tax incentives, students voted over
whelmingly in support of guaran-

training
The weekend of Oct. 17, the
Perry High VOCA Club officers
went to Albany State College for
Officer Training Conference. Along
with our officers, other officers
from Houston Co. High, Northside
High, the Elbcrta Center and
Warner Robins High made the trip.
The bus left about 7:45 a.m. We ar
rived at the college around 9 a.m.
When we arrived, donuts and
milk were served. At 9:30 a.m. the
conference began. There were sev
eral speakers that talked about mo
tivation and having a good and pos
itive attitude about ourselves.
We were assigned to a classroom
according to our office and someone
talked about what we should do and
how to get it done. Our State
Parliamentarian, Monalcthia
Richardson, performed the opening
and closing ceremony and led us in
reciting the VOCA Creed and
Motto. After the conference, we
stopped before leaving Albany to
eat lunch. We arrived in Perry about
3 p.m.

Given three choices for balancing
the Federal Budget, 2,001 students
voted to raise taxes on the wealthy,
1,847 voted to provide a balanced
budget amendment to the Constitu
tion, and 1,196 favored cutting the
capital gain to prompt growth.
When asked whether they were in
favor of or opposed to using
monies now spent on public educa
tion to provide parents the choice of
sending their children to public,
private or religious institutions ,
students voted in favor of having a
choice. The results were 2,068 in
favor of school choice, 1,665 op-

strategies to increase voter partici
pation 1,501 students voted to offer
a tax credit for participation, 1,006
to offer elections on weekends, 883
to abolish the electoral college and
provide direct election, 810 to allow
“none of the above” on the ballot,
416 to organize a third party and
316 to pass a Campaign Reform
Bill.
The Georgia Department of Educa
tion and the Georgia Council for
Economic Education developed the
Mock Election as a statewide cur
riculum project.
