Worrall's spinal
surgery a success
By BRIAN LAWSON
Staff Writer
After undergoing 10 and a half
hours of spinal surgery Wednesday,
Perry Mayor Jim Worrall has been
transferred out of intensive care and
into a private room.
The mayor’s wife, Frances, re
ported the surgery w'ent very well.
"He is doing real well. His doctor
said the surgery could not have
gone better. They had planned to
keep him in ICU for another day,
but he was so alert they felt like
they could move him into a private
room," Mrs. Worrall said.
Dr. Javier Garcia and his team
worked to replace a crushed area in
Worrall’s spine. The doctor's con
sidered using synthetic material but
reportedly used a pieced of Worrall's
rib to replace the damaged spinal
area.

Perry Fireman Ron Frazier didn't
know what to expect last Sunday
afternoon as he rushed to an emer
gency call at 1010 King Circle.
He and his partners arrived and
found 12-year-old Lcthcna Johnson
outside the home with a child she
was babysitting and her cousins.
Johnson had smelled smoke and
saw a pizza burning in the oven. "I
knew I had to get my cousin out of
there because she has asthma,"
Johnson explained.
She wen) next door and called
911. Johnson got everyone out
safely and wailed for the firemen to
arrive.
Frazier said, "She responded bet
ter than most adults do. She was
very calm and did the right thing."
He said he talked to Fire Chief
Gary Hamlin about Johnson's

Westfield's
fall festival
is today

What is a bandage booth? Accord
ing to Kelly Hamslcy, it’s one of
the many activities being offered at
Westfield’s Fall Festival today.
In addition to having imaginary
injuries bandaged up by Mr. Ben
nett’s sixth grade students and their
parents, the festival offers face
painting, fortune telling, a haunted
house, a dunking booth and many
other amusements.
This year parents have sent in
used stuffed animals for the festival.
Children can win one by encircling
a large stuffed animal with a hula
hoop, explained Hamslcy.
The festival also features food for
hungry festival goers. Pizza, hot
dogs, corn-on-the-cob and other
goodies will be available.
Festival booths arc sponsored by
Westfield classes. Hamslcy stated
that the entire school participates,
including high school clubs.

the present proposal with die same
restrictions, he couldn't support it.
The mayor, who's been lobbying
to get the annex, and the city
council didn't anticipate restrictions
in the proposal. The city can't
afford the expenses involved with
meeting the restrictions, according
to city officials.
The board insists the city put a
steel roof on the annex within 12
months; give the city 20 feet to the
east of and parallel to the building;
grant the school board 300 sq. ft. of
rent-free designated space; develop a
plan of use for the annex, which
has to be approved by the board; re

The doctor said his release dale

Mrs. Worrall again expressed her

she said.

Perry Tuesday as a suspect in three
Perry burglaries, Capt. Jim Hardy

crime occurred)."
A string of burglaries involving
