Hospital addresses infant mortality

The Houston County Hospital
Authority voted to approve a plan
involving home visits by Perry
Hospital nurses to mothers who
have recently delivered babies at
the hospital.
The plan is designed to help ad
dress the problem of infant mortal
ity in Georgia. The state currently
ranks near the bottom in infant
mortality figures. The program is
scheduled to begin pending the
state's Department of Medical As
sistance approval.
The home visits must be made
within 28 days after delivery.. All
mothers who deliver at Perry Hos
pital under the Medicaid or Medi
care systems will be included in the
plan.
The visits will consist of a post
partum health assesment of the
mother covering vital signs, areas
effected by childbirth and an assess
ment of the infant’s health including
vital signs, weight gain or loss,
sleeping patterns and a basic new
born exam including range of mo
tion exercises. Nurses with obstet
ric experience and physical assess
ment will handle the visits and

Sexton receives Rotary fellowship award

The local Rotarians honored
fellow member Jim Sexton with
the Paul Harris Fellowship Award
Monday.
The members voted to honor
Sexton because of financial
donations made in his name and by
him, along with his community
service.
"I've worked hard to achieve (the
Award). I'm stunned," Sexton said.
He said the best part about being a
Rotarian is, "having the camaraderie
with the members and the
opportunity to do good and serve
mankind.”
The money contributed in
Sexton's name will be donated to
the Rotary Foundation for use in
several programs such as Polio
Plus and student exchange

make sure the living quarters have
water, heat, power and proper sani
tation. The safety of the home will
also be examined.
Diet for the infant will also be
explored with the mother including
safety in food preparation, a nutri
tional assessment based on an in
terview with the mother and in
structions on the importance of
proper nutrition.
Thenursc will also conduct a be
havior evaluation to assess if the
mother is aware of how to give
proper care to the infant.
If problems are found during the
visit the nurse is instructed to ar
range for the necessary steps to al
leviate the problem.
The Houston County Public
Health Department will be involved
in tracking the infants for immu
nizations and arranging follow-up
check-ups. If intervention is needed
for safety or sanitation the board of
health will help arrange the neces
sary steps.
Perry Hospital Admininistrator
Jim Peak said the program is an ex
cellent start to addressing the infant
mortality rate and helping reduce
lengthy medical stays and therefore
costs, through primary care.

infant mortality rates in the United

national task force on AIDS was
also shown. The video featured
members in different sections of the
country who have AIDS or those
with family members who do.
Floyd Gregory, president of the
local club, said the purpose of the
program is to educate the members
about AIDS since it's a national
concern.
Next week the Rotarians will
continue their AIDS awareness
program as Mike U. Smith of
Mercer University speaks about the
disease.

The authority approved capital
equipment purchases at Perry Hos
pital totaling $84,368. Included
among the items to be purchased
arc a walk-in freezer, a serving
line, deep fryer, ice machine, range,
hot food tables, chairs and tables
and a food disposal system all for
the new dietary center and lab
equipment.
The Houston County Healthcare
Complex, including Perry Hospital
and Houston Medical Center, wrote
off $534,567 in bad debts and
$196,627 in indigent care for
September.
The authority's next meeting will
be Tuesday, Nov. 24.
