As tor the Westfield Hornets, Tat
tnall is gone and everybody associ
ated with the program is probably
relieved.
As I said before I'm looking for
ward to watching Joby Boydstonc's
offense.
The Hornets need to win by 14
and hold Mt. de Sales to no more
than six points to clinch a home
field spot for the region playoffs.
That is one of the more bizarre
rules 1 have encountered, but it will
provide one more piece of drama for
an already interesting contest.
I said this in my last column and I
will re-emphasize it, anybody who
thinks they know about sports and
quickness and ability to spread the
ball around.
"All the discussion about points
allowed and home field is meaning
less unless we beat Mt. de Sales.
They're a team that keeps hanging
around and doesn’t quit," Boydstonc
said.
Friday's game will be played at
Henderson Stadium in Macon, kick
off is at 8 p.m.
The recreation office is open
Monday through Friday 8 a.in. - 5
p.m. For additional information call

Basketball sign-ups began on
Nov. 3 and will continue until
Nov. 13 at the recreation office.
Sign-up costs arc SI3 per person
and 526 for two or more family
members. Practice is expected to
begin Dec. 1 and the league will
start in earlv January.

I'd like some exposure to tne
mysterious world of the Georgia

person in Perry (besides Bobby
Tuggle) must have an interesting
outdoor tale they'd like to relate.
Last note, different subject. My
all-time favorite athlete Magic
Johnson retired again, this time in
the face of fear, ignorance and
genuine concern on the part of
much of the NBA. Let me just
say, if you can find a classier
athlete than Magic or a better team
player let me know, I’d like to meet
him.
Perry Country Club pro shop continues to operate
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
The staff at the Perry Country
Club has adapted to the circum
stances forced on them by the club's
Aug. 28 fire.
Following the shock and confu
sion the fire produced, the staff, in
cluding golf pros Rodney Dill and
John Smith went back to work.
In the aftermath of the fire, one of
the major questions the club was
asked was, "How soon will you be
open for golf?"
Dill and Smith began the transi
tion from large pro shop to
makeshift shop within days after
the fire.
"We were operating within three
days alter the fire. We collected
green and cart fees from the back of
a camper for about a month. We
conducted most of the business out
side but we were able to continue to
operate," Dill said.
In early October the club moved
in a trailer to serve as a temporary
pro shop and concessions area.
With help from club members, the
staff constructed a porch, erected
shelves and provided other items
necessary to turn the trailer into a
shop.
The fire destroyed the club’s main
ballroom and kitchen area.
The club was scheduled to hold
their Club Championship tourna
ment Labor Day weekend, just one
week after the fire.
"There was some talk about can
celling the event but we went ahead
with it. The only problem we had
was there was a lot of rain the first
day. We had about 40 people duck
ing under the cart shed trying to

stay dry. It was a unique experi
ence," Dill said.
Since then the club has held their
Senior's and Ladies club champi
onships. One of the problems the
fire has created has been a lack of
meeting space for golf assocation
members.
A committee of club members
was formed to gather input from the
entire membership on how the new
club should be constructed and find
an architect to do the initial design
work. The committee is still work
ing on the plans and Perry Country
Club has not yet set a construction
date.
"1 wouldn't wish a fire on anyone.
But the thing I was impressed with
more than anything was how the
club has unified to face the prob
lems caused by the fire. A lot of
times when private clubs have
problems there is dissension; the
people have come together to pitch
in and to help. In that way, it has
been a good experience," Dill said.
The concessions area was forced to
operate using the shade of pecan
trees, ice chests and a gas grill until
the trailer was leased. The club no
longer has any facilities for sit
down dining or for drinks in the
19th Hole.
Concessions owner and operator
Janice Hancock suffered a financial
loss in the fire but said it has
caused her to appreciate what she
does have.
"I can't describe what a devastating
feeling the fire produced. I have
learned to be appreciative of every
thing I have. You never know
when it will be taken away. The
support we have received from our
friends has been wonderful," Han
cock said.
The club held a Sadie Hawkins
Tournament, which requires any
lady participating in the event to
select a male partner, pay his fees
and provide him lunch.
