Kellwood expands Perry operation

Kellwood Home Fashions
recently completed an additional
three-level structure with an
adjacent shipping dock to its eight
acre plant in Perry.
The 40 foot high building,
which adds approximately two
million cubic feet, has been added
to house a new material handling
system, Senior Industrial Engineer
Tom Roberts said.

conveyors that are connected to
computers and will send bar-coded
cartons to the correct location in the
warehouse.”
“It will help Kellwood better
serve customers by reducing the
shipping time and help reduce costs
associated with warehousing,” he
said.
Currently the company rents
warehouses throughout the city to
store their comforters. Roberts said
“It’s expensive, and the warehouses
are full.” The new system will save
Kellwood $200,000 a year, he said.
The $2.5 million structure will
house 110,000 comforters. He said
the comforters take a lot of space
because they’re bulky.
“The expansion will not cause
any new positions,” he said. The
company employs 400 people now,
and according to Roberts, “It’s been
the most stable company in Perry.”
