Aladdin romances Princess Jasmine, the Sultan's lovely daughter in Walt Disney
Pictures' all-new Arabian Night fairy tale "Aladdin", Disney’s 31st full-length
animated feature which boasts new songs and an original score by Academy Award
winning composer Alan Menken.
'Aladdin' is a great animated feature
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
Just when you thought nothing
could come close to being as good
as the Disney animated feature
"Beauty and the Beast," the wonder
fully marvelous people at Disney
bounce back and give us another an
imated feature as wonderful in its
way as "B&B" was in its. The new
film "Aladdin" is shorter on ro
mance but longer on comedy and
action. And by being different it
carves out a brand new niche in the
wonderful world of Disney anima
tion.
"Aladdin" starts off as a typical
Disney animated tuner. We meet a
young man of the streets ridmed
Aladdin. He is good hearted arid dar- 12
ing as is his pet and partner, a
monkey named Abou. Aladdin
dreams of meeting the girl of his
dreams and one day in the market
place he docs. Imagine his surprise
when she turns out to be the
Sultan's daughter Jasmine, running
away from die palace because she is
being forced into marrying someone
she doesn't love.
Before she and Aladdin have a
chance to become anything more
than friends, they arc captured and
returned to the palace. There the
evil Jalar tricks Aladdin into going
into a deadly place and taking a
magic lamp. Aladdin docs this with
courage but Jalar tries to kill him
as soon as he grabs hold of the
lamp. This fails and Aladdin sur
vives - with the lamp.
major at Fort Valley State College.
The groom-elect is the grandson
of Mr. Timothy Brown of Fort
Valley, Mrs. Carrie Brown of
Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Willie
Mae Clark of Fort Valley. He is a
graduate of Jamaica Plains High
School in Boston, Mass.
The wedding is planned for 4
p.m. December 5, 1992 at Greater
Word of Deliverance Church by
invitation only.
A quick rub to clean up the lamp
and a genic appears, willing to
grant Aladdin three wishes. Now
the movie really moves into high
gear.
Robin Williams is the voice of
the Genic and the comic gold mine
of the film. In truly inimitable
Williams fashion the genic changes
shape from one character to the next
leaving the audience breathless and
in stitches. Some of the humor
may go over the kids' heads but for
the parents in the audience these
sharp inside jokes arc hilarious.
Three of the songs for "Aladdin"
are the last written by the team of
Alan Mekcn and Howard Ashman.
Following Ashman's death Menken
teamed up with Tim Rice for three
more. It is impossible to tell which
ones arc Ashman's and which ones
belong to Rice. They all have a
great sound and story moving
lyrics.
For some reason in this movie
the young man who speaks for
Aladdin docs not do his singing.
Scott Wcingcr speaks and Brad
Kane sings. The same is true of

has feelings is an important part of
communication. Sometimes when
one person forgets about another's
feelings, the person is hurt because
of something that is said. After
supper, plan to play "Let's pretend."
The parent says to all the family
members, "In our family we have
all kinds of feelings. Sometimes I
feel sad, or happy, or tired, or con
fused. Each of us will make a face
that expresses a feeling, and all the
others will try to figure out how
the person who made the face is
Princess Jasmine. Linda Larkin
speaks and Lea Salonga sings. It is
a perfect blend of voices as the
change from speaker to singer can
never be distinguished.
Giving Robin Williams a run for
the money in comedy effect is
Gilbert Gottfried. He speaks for
lago, the parrot partner in crime to
the evil Jafar. Just as Williams'
personality gives life to the Genic,
so docs Gottfried's personality in
fluence the way lago moves, acts
and looks. It is a wonderful comedy
performance and Gottfried gets the
laughs each and every time they arc
available.
The movie is rated G. r
Songs, comedynand adventure

story between Aladdin and Jasmine
thrown in for good measure. I have
seen this movie twice now and be

viewing. "Beauty and the Beast"
was a Disney masterpiece.
"Aladdin" is a Disney triumph. You
can't compare the two. You can
only enjoy them both.
