Families need to spend time together
An important characteristic of
strong families is spending time
together. If you believe that life is
the most valuable possession you
have then sharing a piece of your
life is the most precious gift you
have to offer. Few activities offer
so much in return. Sharing time
with your family eases loneliness
and isolation, nurtures relationships
and creates a family identity.
Quantity and quality g o
hand-in-hand. Obviously some
quantity is necessary for time to
gether, be it good or bad. It's not
necessary, however, to spend every
available minute together as a fam
ily. The time individuals spend one
on-one within the family-child
with child, child with parent, and
parent with parent-also is impor
tant. Equally important is time for
friends, hobbies, sports and soli
tude. Healthy families keep a good

Baking soda
can prevent
problems
Last week we learned how to in
crease the viability of seeds in stor
age and how to beat the Indian ne
matode with periwinkles. This
week I would like to share some
short shots from the Novembcr-
Deccmber issue of National
Gardening.
You might be interested to know
that researchers at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York,
have found that using ordinary bak
ing soda mixed with water will con
trol certain rose diseases. Both
powdery mildew and blackspot were
controlled with an application of
one tablespoon of baking soda per
gallon of water, mixed with 2 1/2
gallons of Sunspray horticultural
oil. (Actually, the oil itself has no
effect against black spot, but since
it did enhance the mildew control
and helped the baking soda adhere to
the plants, the researchers recom
mend the combination).
The researchers said the spray
should be applied weekly and fol
lowing rains during the growing
season. Other Cornell researchers
found that a weekly application of
soda and oil was effective against
mildew on pumpkins. The spray
probably works for a wide range of
other crops as well, they said.
You've heard of fact-finding mis
sions-well, USDA workers have re
turned from a fruit-finding mission
in eastern Europe and found trees
resistant to the psylla, an aphid-like
insect that is the most serious pest
of pears in America.
Researchers in West Virginia
then grew young grafted trees of
these varieties and found that more
than 20 percent of them continued
to have good resistance to the
psylla. There's only one problem,
though-the grafted trees produced
small, bitter, inferior fruit.
Researchers expect, however, to be
able to isolate the gene that pro
duces the trait that the psylla
doesn't like and introduce it to va
rieties such as Bartlett, Nagness,
Honeysweet and other fine pear va
rieties.
Here's away, writes Genevieve
Mehler of Jonestown, Penn., to
control aphids, whiteflies, cabbage
moths and other pests in your gar
den at practically no cost. The foam
trays used to package meats and
vegetables in the grocery store,
treated with a little petroleum jelly
and liquid soap, make very effective
substitutes for the manufactured
versions.
Coat both sides with petroleum
jelly, Ms. Mehler says, mix one
tablespoon of a liquid soap with
one quart of water, pour it into a
spray bottle and spread the mixture
on the tray. Then staple it on a
wooden stake and place it among
the garden crops.
Yellow trays attract cabbageworm
moths, whiteflies and moths, and
the white ones control flea beetles
and even plum curculio on fruit
trees.
I can’t wait to try that one my
self!

• Mealtimes. In today's fast
paced world families eat together
less frequently. Nevertheless,
whether it's breakfast, lunch or din

some families spend together.
When possible, make mealtime a

off the television. Put newspapers,
work from the office and other cares

share interesting experiences, plans,

of everyone rushing off when the

pleasant conversation. Let family
members know that mealtime is a
family occasion.

communicating and playing with
your family. Although doing it
yourself may seems faster and
easier, allowing children to help
teaches them self-reliance and coop

important role in the day-to-day
functioning of the family. In the
long run, the work gets done more
quickly and the children gain a
sense of responsibility.

• Special Events. A special
event is anything you want to cele

and "just because." Strong families
regard these as opportunities for the
entire family to be together.
• Outdoor Activities. Try
the team approach for yard work.
