cessful. It may mean that you con
centrate on the negative. Become an
individual who is fine-tuned to the
positive. When life gives you le
mons, make lemonade. If you look
for good in people, you will find it.
I-messages are an effective
means of expressing positive feel
ings, appreciation and gratitude. "I
appreciate," "I really like," and "I
especially enjoy," " I love you be
cause," and "I thirik you're special
because" are examples of I-incs
sages that express appreciation.
Make it a goal to show appreciation
daily to each family member.
When we receive appreciation
graciously, we say in effect, "I ap
preciate your gesture of kindness."
Ignoring appreciation sends the
message that we don't value our
appreciator's opinions and feelings.
Express your appreciation by say
ing things like, "Thank you for
telling me," or "It was thoughtful
of you to notice."
When we speak of appreciation,
we sometimes are referring to an
increase in value. In this sense,
we're usually talking about real es
tate, stocks and other investments.
However, expressing appreciation
to family members and others also
causes an increase in value. When
we feel appreciated, we feel better
about ourselves. Our self-esteem, or
the value we place on ourselves,
improves with every positive stroke
we receive. On the other hand,
when someone puts us down it may
take many positive strokes to repair
(he damage.

Wonder of Muppets Christmas Carol rubs off quickly
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
Having the muppets perform
roles in Dickens' "A Christmas
Carol" was a great idea. Who
wouldn't be excited about having
Kermit the Frog play Bob Cratchit
and Miss Piggy his wife Emily. It's
surefire entertainment - wrong! It's
a good idea that probably looked
better on paper than it does on film.
There arc several things wrong
with the movie. First, a little of the
muppets goes a long way. And in
this movie there arc a lot of mup
pets for an interminable time.
They're everywhere! They're every
where! Maybe it wouldn't be so bad
if everybody in the movie was a
muppet, but Brian Henson and
company have opted to have a blend
of humans and muppets in the cast
and it just doesn't work.
Human actor Michael Caine has
the choice role of Scrooge. And he
docs a fine job with it. But there is
nothing distinctive about the way
he docs it. In order to stand out he
needed some hook to make the role
You can save your Christmas poinsettias for months
This week I would like to look at
the popular Christmas flower, the
poinsettia. Many of you have pur
chased these colorful potted plants,
decorated your homes with them
and decided, rather than throw them
away on New Year's Day, to keep
them for a while. This is reason
able, since poinsettias will not stop
growing-they will retain their
bright foliage for many months.
1 would like to take you through
the holidays with the poinsettia, de
tailing their proper care through the
Christmas season as well as
through the winter and the follow
ing fall, and then tell you how you
can get your "pet" poinsettia to
change colors all over again.
After Christmas, place plants in a
cool, bright area to retain color
longer; ideal is 72 degrees day, 60
degrees night and at least six hours
of natural light per day. Poinsettias
require a lot of bright light for best
growth. Generally, keep plants
moist to the touch, but avoid stand
ing water. Use an all-purpose fertil
izer at recommended rates every
couple of weeks.
As side shoots begin to develop
around Saint Patrick's Day, remove
fading bracts (colored leaves), dying
flowers and dried foliage at the base
of the plants. Continue to keep the
plants in a very bright interior loca
tion.
Around Memorial Day, plants
may have grown to three feet and
Appreciation encourages us to
continue behavior valued by others.
Without appreciation, we easily be
come discouraged. Standards that arc
too high also invite failure and dis
couragement. Discouraged persons
over time learn to focus on defi
ciencies, defects and liabilities.
They are most aware of their weak
nesses and may be completely
unaware of their personal strengths.
Often, they become picky people
who always find a mistake or a
weakness. Through appreciation and
encouragement, condition your fam
ily members to look at their bless
ing, what they have completed and
what they are, instead of what they
lack, what they haven't done and
what they can't be.

and not just a solid repeat of what
other actors have done with the
part.
He is at his best in the early
scenes when he is practicing his
blackhearted ways. That is when he
is fun. When he secs the error of
his ways and becomes a goody
goody lie is no longer interesting.
Plus there is no clear reason as to
why he has changed his tunc. He
gets taken back in time to sec the
way he was, but nothing there is
revelatory.
Christmas present is the same.
Only Christmas future is enough to
scare him into goodness but by that
time he is already a changed man. A
changed dull man.
Another flaw is the fact that Miss
Piggy has only a couple of scenes.
If you are a muppet fan, you are go
ing to be a Miss Piggy fan. So
when you sec "The Muppet
Christmas Carol” you immediately
think the bacon broad is going to
be the star. She isn't and the movie
is all the worse for it.

Another negative is the musical
score by Paul Williams. This is the
man who gave is "Evergreen” and
"Rainy Days and Mondays" as well
as that Muppet classic "The
Rainbow Connection". There arc no
classics in this score. Not even a
near miss.
Finally the store is just too well
known. We have had "Christmas
Carols" by the bundle on TV, in
other movie versions and all over
the local theater stages. Enough is
enough is enough. We didn't need
another one, even if it is a muppet
one.
The movie is rated "G".
Some kids may get their kicks
from this muppet bonanza, but
most will wear out after the first 15
minutes or so. Brian Henson is car
rying on his father's tradition of
solid family fare but lor this film
having the muppets on display is
not enough. It needs something ex
tra and what that is, is never found.
1 scored "The Muppet ChrisUnas
Carol" a ghostly 4 out of 10.
On Labor Day, move the plant
indoors. Give it at least six hours
of direct sunlight. Continue to fer
tilize, but reduce amount by about
two-thirds.
On the first day of autumn, give
or take 10 days, start giving your
poinsettia 13-14 hours of continu
ous uninterrupted darkness. You
may put it in a closet, in the base
ment, or under a box, as long as
you do not let any light get to the
plant. Be sure to continue to give it
plenty of bright light during the
day, however. Short days and long
nights induce flower and bract for
mation. Keep it at a night tempera
ture of 62-65 degrees. Rotate each
week to give all sides of the plant
light.
On Christmas Day, brag about
your beautiful "new" poinsettias.
Start a new cycle.
