I'm ready for
1993,1 think
It would make sense for this space
to be filled with memories of the
year gone by. A recollection of
buzzer beating jump shots, game
winning RBl’s in the last frame,
goal line stands etc.
Unfortunately, because I'm a
Johnny Come Lately to this job,
most of my memories of Perry
from this year relate to city council
meetings, development authority
decisions and chamber ribbon
cuttings.
I didn’t actually sec a football
game until late October and my
knowledge about other events is
limited to conversations and reading
Cosby's stories.
I would love to recount the final
minutes of Westfield's state finals
basketball game.
Woody Green's hard earned state
championship at 135 pounds
deserves more than a few sentences.
The Perry baseball team came
close to repeating as state champs
and I'm looking forward to seeing
them play if the weather ever turns
warm.
I apologize to the readers of these
pages that I can't recall the details
that you can, a clutch hit, a three
pointer etc. Give me some time
and we'll have the same memories.
New Year's Resolutions
January 1 provokes people into
setting goals for the coming year
and trying to make themselves
better people.
Since I have more flaws than
resolve this is usually sort of a
depressing process, but once more
into the breach.
I’ve decided to get rid of my Sega
Genesis system. It's a lot of fun,
but it definitely is a life waster, I
develop a false sense of success
when I score against the All-
Madden team. I tune out the world
and that's not always bad, but I like
it too much.
I resolve to manage my time
better. I'm arguably the world's
worst time manager. You may
know the scenario, it'll be a half
hour before I’m supposed to be to
work and I'll lay in bed doing
ridiculous calculations
"Let's see if I sleep five more
minutes, I'll need 30 seconds shave,
10 more seconds to wash my hair,
30 seconds to brush my teeth, 30
seconds to get dressed and I’ll still
have 13 minutes to get to work.”
I seriously do that and I'm hoping
this year I'll get a better handle on
how not to do that.
I'm also planning on being nicer
to the people around me.
You know how you want to come
home at the end of the day and recap
all the lousy things that happened
to you?
Not many people do, but the other
end of it is lousy as well. For my
wife to sit there while I brood in
silence is not cool.
I'm going to work on learning
why people enjoy hunting. So far,
I can’t get over the idea of sitting
on a ladder, waiting for Bambi to
appear and blowing him away. I
know there is much more to it than
than that but so far I haven’t been
converted.
I also resolve to take the SEC
seriously. There a tremendous
number of people out there who
live and die by what goes on
between the teams in that
conference. It's hard for me to
imagine getting excited about the
option bowl between Auburn and
Alabama, but I'll try.
I resolve to go to bed earlier.
This cast coast time thing has me
staying up late watching the Braves
or Monday Night Football and I
just can't do it.
I’m going to read Ulysses.
I’hc big one is I got some weights
for Christmas and now I have to
start using them. I used to lift
regularly but it's a lot easier to keep
going than it is to get going.
Every day since Christmas I've said,
"Well look's like tomorrows the
day I get started, to no avail.
I'm not sure what the point is,
except to stop feeling like a
marshmallow.
Before when I lifted and developed
a few muscles I wondered when I'd
start feeling like a lough guy. It
never happened, I knew that I
wasn't tough because I had biceps it
just meant I'd spent a lot of time
doing the same thing over and over
and over and over again.
Maybe the key is to go to the
weights instead of Sega Genesis,
talk to my wife while I lift, get so
tired I go to bed early and wake up
refreshed in piety of time for work.
Happy New Year.

By BRIAN LAWSON

Perry’s recreation program has
grown for the second consecutive
year reaching nearly 1,000 area resi
dents in 1992.
Starting with basketball which
saw an increase from 16 to 30
teams in 1992, Perry recreation
drew more participants in every
program.
The department offered youth bas
ketball, soccer, baseball, softball,
football, chccrlcading, adult soft
ball, areobics and volleyball.
Fall soccer saw an increase from
four teams to nine teams and drew
126 participants.

track,
basketball
Perry's Dcidre Williams was a
dominant performer for the Lady
Panthers in track and basketball.
Williams won both the discuss
and shot put in the region
championships and qualified for the
state finals. She threw the discuss
108 1/2 feet. She threw the shot,
33'9 feet, almost two feet farther
than the second place finisher.
In softball she was voted the
Panthers best offensive player.
For her work on the track, she
was named most valuable player.
Williams was also named
basketball MVP for leading the
team in scoring and rebounding.
Perry basketball coach Tim
Simmons said, Williams was the
key to the team's staying in close
games against quality opponents.
When discussing his 1992-93
team Simmons said he was please
to have four starters back, but that
there was no way to measure the
effect of losing the team's best
player and emotional leader.
She was also given the Houston
Home Journal Award as Perry's
outstanding female athlete.
Williams recieved a basketball
scholarship to Valdosta State.

The growth of the soccer program
surprised Perry Recreation Director
Ben Hamrick.
"Our football numbers were down
but we saw a big increase in soccer.
A lot of kids arc playing soccer in
stead of football. Soccer has incrc
assed steadily everywhere due to the
strong interest in soccer. It's an up
and coming sport," he said.
Despite a slight drop from last
year, Perry recreation football at
tracted 150 players and 70 cheer
leaders.
Recreation baseball had an in
ercasc of three teams from last year
and involved 234 players.

Deldre Williams won both the discuss and the shot
put at the GHSA 4-AA track meet In April. Williams
beat her opponents by a combined eight feet.
I feel feel like we're ahead of where
I thought we'd be, based on the
numbers of participating in our
prorgam. We're in need of facilities
for our indoor sports. With the
number of players inolvcd in our
basketball program our facililcs
will not support continued growth i
at this rate, we need another facil- I
ily," Hamrick said.
Men's softball was introduced this
season and 15 teams participated.
Hamrick pointed to the work of
the parents and volunteers, the
recreation commission and the city
council for their work and support
of Perry's recreation program.
