Perry sports
Sports in Perry,

The first half of 1992 in Perry
sports included one state champion
crowned, a region run by the West
field Hornets which left them only
two points shy of their own state
championship, a 7\-4 performance
by the Perry Panthers basketball
squad, several region titles, includ
ing the Perry High baseball team
for the third straight year and a
blossoming recreation department.
Seniors will be missed
Standout seniors Christi Horsting,
Deidre Williams, Tazari Green,
John Lambcrth, Woody Green,
Tobe Gilbert and Sy Jones all grad
uated after serving as their respec
tive team's leaders.
WHS Boys Hoops
Basketball in Perry thrived in
1992. The Westfield Hornets re
bounded from a five game losing
streak that ended in early January to
go 6-2 and win the regular season
region championship. The Hornets
werd seeded number one for the
GISA AAA tournament and they
lived up to that seeding capturing
the title with 72-69 win over Mt.
dc Sales behind Lamberth's 20
points.
Westfield preceded to the state
tournament where they blew out
highly rated Memorial 85-56,
nearby rival Stratford 69-61 where
they were led by Austin Abney's 26
points. In the semi-finals the Hor
nets beat Monroe 87-77, with four
players scoring in double figures.
The Hornets met Mt. dc Sales, a
team they had played three times
during the season, in the finals.
Mt. de Sales won the state cham
pionship 65-63 behind a lay-up
with five seconds to play.
The Hornets came back from a
63-58 deficit in the final minute
and tied the score at 65 when John
Gamble converted a free throw.
Mt. de Sales held the ball and won
it on a lay-up by Eric Castro-
Proveda. «
PHS Boys Hoops
The Petty PanthSrs went 21-5 and
earned themselves a region champi
onship. The Panthers defeated their
nemesis Tri-County on the Eagles
home floor to win the region title.
In the final, Keith Wimberly scored
21 and Jason Brown added 18 points
to lead the Panthers.
Perry was beaten in the GHSA 4-
AA semi-fianls by Manchester, de
spite having four players in double
figures including Wimberly with
22, Brown with 21, Green with 16
and Eric Richardson with 15.
Lady Hornets
The Westfield Lady Hornets made
it to the GISA final four, after back
to back playoff wins over favored,
19-4 John Milledge 45-39 and Ter
rell 73-56. Both teams were seeded
higher than the Lady Hornets going
into the tournament. Horsting aver
aged 26 points in the two games.
The Lady Hornets season ended
with a loss to Southland in the
state semi-finals.
Lady Panthers
The Perry Lady Panthers were led
by Williams, who was voted their
MVP. The Lady Panthers finished
the year 12-11, which included sev
eral close losses and an upset win
over highly ranked Peach County.
PHS Wrestling
Woody Green won the state
wrestling championship at 135
pounds. Green finished his senior
year 29-1 and his only loss was to
the AAA state champ at 130
pounds. Green pinned his first
three opponents at the state meet
and defeated Kevin Kinsey of East
Hall in the finals 8-6 with a take
down with 30 seconds left in the
match. ■
PHS Baseball
Perry's baseball team won their j
third straight region championship, j
and made it to the state quarterfinals
behind strong performances from
Jones, Gilbert, Dallas Waldrip and
Jason Sikes. The Panthers finished
the season 23-4 for a two year
record of 51-6, which included a
state championship in 1991.
Hornet' Baseball
The Westfield baseball team ad
vanced to the state semi-finals be
fore bowing out. The Hornets were
led by MVP pitcher Lon Talton.
Brad Dehem, Chad Evans, Danny
Perfect, Brian Dunaway, and Troy
Nuss were named to the All Region
team.
The Panther track team won it's
fifth straight region title, behind
Teruya Williams first place pole
vault finish. The Panthers 4x400
relay team finished second in the
state meet.

The Perry Middle School Bth grade girls celebrate their second Houston County
championship in a row. The Lady Panthers beat Tabor 38-22, behind 16 points
from Shanita Gilbert.
