Around 200 people marched from Oldfield Baptist Church on Houston Lake Road to Greater Union Baptist
Church on Carroll Street in honor of Dr. King Monday. Guest speakers addressed the crowd.
is an important holiday to celebrate
because “Dr. King was concerned
about the quality of life for
mankind. He fought for humanitari
anism his whole life.”
Edgerton said he anticipated more
participation in the march, and
looks for a larger turnout next year.
South Georgia peaches need to chill out
Peach orchards in Middle Georgia
and the mountains are on track for
getting enough cold weather to
make a good crop. But the state's
second biggest peach-growing
region could be headed for trouble.
"The situation in South Georgia
looks critical," said Gerard Krewcr,
horticulturist with the University of
Georgia Extension Service. "It’s the
area from Tifton south and going
over to the coast that we're most
concerned about at this point."
Depending on the variety, peach
trees in South Georgia need 400 to
850 hours of temperatures 45 de
grees and below to produce fruit.
Some counties had racked up
only 290 chill hours through early
January. Even with an optimistic
view that the month will end with
an average number of chill hours
and that another 100 hours will
come in February, trees still would
have just 540 chill hours or so.
"It may be possible to still have
a crop of the lower chilling vari
eties, the varieties that require 400
up to 550 hours. It's those varieties
that require 750 to 850 that I'm
really worried about at this point,"
Krewer said.
"If you're as little as 200 hours
short on most of the peach vari-

ctics, you'll have a complete crop
failure."
Central Georgia, which produces
the majority of the state's peaches,
had accumulated about 500 chill
hours through early January.
"If they continue t receive normal
chilling in the latter part of January
and early February, they'll be OK,"
Krewcr said.
With 800 to 900 chill hours, or
chards in North Georgia already
have nearly enough chilling for a
crop.
Meanwhile, growers in South
Georgia arc watching the weather
and their calendars. Researchers
with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture have found that trees
need chill hours before Feb. 15.
