Perry offers coaching certification
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
The Perry recreation department
will conduct a coaching certification
clinic in conjunction with the
National Youth Sports Coaches
Association Thursday night from
6-10 p.m. at the Welcome Center.
The certification process involves
watching an approximately 2 hour
video dealing with basic coaching
philosophy, child psychology, drug
awareness, getting along with par
ents and treating sports injuries.
Membership dues for the certifi
cation program arc Sls annually
and the lee covers all available
sports the coach would like to be
certified in.
At the end of the video, a test is
given to the assembled coaches. If
the test is passed successfully, the
now-certified coaches watch another
video specifically related to the
sport they arc coaching. In the case
of Thursday night the program will
be designed for current basketball
coaches in the Perry recreation
league.

Pierce said the key to the season
is how well his team performs in
the region tournament, Feb. 17-19.
'Everybody is kind of beating ev
erybody else this year. One game
is all it takes. We're a little behind
last year’s team but we’re starling to
play a little bit better. You go
through an entire region schedule
and then you go back and play a re
gion tournament where all anybody
has to do is win two games. So,
you can't place too much emphasis
on the season, in the tournament
anything can happen," Pierce said.
Pierce said he has been pleased by
the play of freshmen Brian Nash

Lady Hornets face tough stretch
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
Westfield Lady Hornet basketball
Coach Donna Campbell secs her
team improving each game and she
views the next five games as the
key juncture of her team's season.
After a non-region contest with
Windsor Friday night, the Lady
Hornets face George Walton and
Ml. dc Sales on llte road. They are
then scheduled to host Tattnall and
George Walton to close out the
regular season.
"Our goal is to be one of the top
three in the region and anything can
happen. Crunch time is coming. I
feel like we need to win four of the
next live which we arc capable of
doing," Campbell said.
The Lady Hornets arc currently
5-8 for the season following two
disappointing losses last week.
The Lady Hornets lost to Mi. de
Sales in overtime and at Monroe on
a free throw with no time showing
on the clock.
"I'm a little surprised by our
won-loss record, 1 thought it would
be better. But I was encouraged by
our play last week. We limited our
turnovers and we should have won
both games. Defensively we are
holding teams to the low 40’s
which isn't great but it's solid. The
problem we've faced all season is a
lack of offensive production from
the perimeter," Campbell said.
Most of Westfield’s offensive
production has come from senior
April Horsting and freshman
Jennifer Smith.
Horsting is averaging 15 per
game and has been instrumental in
each of Westfield's wins.
"Every game, April goes out and
give 150 percent. She plays with
so much intensity and she has made
the key plays for us all year,"
Campbell said.
Smith had scored in double fig
ures in four of the last five games
before silling out most of Friday's
game at Monroe with an injury.
"Jennifer is gening better and bel
ter every game. In mid-January I
knew she would be instrumental to
our play and she has been,"
Campbell said.
"We believe this program makes
our sports better from the stand
point of having more qualified
coaches. As a parent, if your child
broke his leg you wouldn't take
him to anyone off of the street,
you'd take him to a doctor. In this
case, parents can be assured that the
people who arc coaching their chil
dren have been trained, are qualified
and have a better understanding of
what coaching involves," Perry
Recreation Director Ben Hamrick
said.
The coaching certification pro
gram was started in 1981 and
Georgia's Recreation and Parks
Association adopted the program 4-
5 years ago, according to Hamrick.
The program is still voluntary
but any team participating in a
Georgia district or stale athletic
event must have at least one
NYSCA certified member on its
coaching stall'.
"It’s a three year program. For
example, the coaches who partici
and Malt Shepley.
"I can’t say enough about the two
freshmen they’ve come in and
played well for us. Jell Dortch has
also come off the bench and played
well,” Pierce said.
Intensity and defense arc two
areas Pierce said the Hornets will
have to improve on to make the
rest of the season successful.
"Our intensity has to pick up.
All the loose balls at Monroe were
picked up by them. Fast season we
were getting to those balls and good
things would come out of il. We'd
get a fast break started or pull up
and hit a three. We're the only

April Horsting has led the Lady Hornets in scoring all
season.
Despite the two paintul tosses,
Campbell said she is very pleased
with hcr’s team's attitude.
I'm real pleased with their attitude
and I'm proud of how hard they're
working, trying to improve. They
haven't given up. Even when we've
pate and pass tomorrow night will
come back a year from now and
watch the second year basketball
video for 45 then take another lest.
After the third year, the coaches
will be certified for life and won't
be required to attend any more clin
ics,” Hamrick said.
Perry currently has approximately
18 certified coaches in a variety of
sports including, baseball, basket
ball, soccer, softball and football.
"We've got 37 head coaches in
this year's recreation basketball
league and at least 30 of them have
assistant coaches. We're hoping
that about two-thirds of the head
coaches and at least some of the as
sistants will participate tomorrow
night," Hamrick said.
The basketball video, presented
by San Antonio Spurs assistant
coach Greg Poppovich and Spurs
forward Scan Elliot, is designed to
help coaches set up offense and de
fense, run a practice and build on
the lessons taught throughout the
season.
one's who can make that happen, if
we sit back it will never happen for
us. If we start playing better de
fense, like we did against Mt. de
Sales it helps our offense," Pierce
said.
Evaluating the rest of the region
schedule, Pierce said his team is
looking forward to playing Tattnall
again and he wants to see a better
performance against Monroe.
"Monroe is a tough place to play,
but we missed eight lay ups and
didn't get back on defense which let
that kid shoot the three's. If we re
bound and run our offense we'll be
competitive," Pierce said.
been down 20, they've kept playing
hard. The keys for us the rest of the
season will be getting more offen
sive production from our perimeter
game, doing a better job blocking
out and limiting our turnovers,"
Campbell said.

The Lady Panthers exploded for
24 points in the fourth quarter for a
road region win Tuesday night.
"The game was close until the
end of the third quarter when we
switched to a man-to-man defense.
It slowed down their offense and we
were able to get some steals and
score," Coach Tim Simmons said.
The Lady Panthers had three
players combine for 57 points.
Benita Billings led the way with 24
points, Angela Lcaggett scored 18
points and Chasity Thornton tossed
in 15.
"I'm proudest of the way they
were able to come back out after
halftime and play better defense and
do a better job rebounding,"
Simmons said.
Irwin,
from 9A
the match, "I was very pleased with
our effort. The team rallied to
gether in the absence of Captain
Mike Jolley who was ill. We wres
tled aggressively. It was a good
tune-up for the Invitational."
The Panthers got victories in
both matches from 140 pounder
John Rowland, 145 pounder George
Francis and 152 pounder Tarence
Hill. Michael Register won in a
walkover against Irwin County and
scored a second period pin against
Central.
Perry's 189 pounder Johnathon
Gilbert injured his knee during his
match against Irwin County.
Despite being in obvious pain,
Gilbert insisted on completing the
match and though he lost 13-10, he
saved the Panthers three points by
refusing to forfeit.
The Perry Invitational which be
gins Friday will have 24 schools
represented and several teams ranked
near the top in the state ratings.
The field is likely to be the most
competitive the Panthers will sec
until the state finals.
"I hope that our best kids will
not be intimidated against the
strong field of competitors. I want
to see them wrestle well in prepara
tion for the area tournament the fol
lowing week," Hasscngcr said.
