Breakfast is a meal not to be skipped
If you could do one thing to help
your child get ahead in school, what
would you do? Buy a computer?
Hire a tutor? Those may help, but
I've got an easier, cheaper way to
help your child: serve breakfast.
Children who eat breakfast do
better in school than children who
skip breakfast. It makes sense, and
scientific studies confirm it.
Breakfast is probably the most

growing

Last week we looked at growing
flower and vegetable seedlings in
doors using fluorescent lights. I
promised this week to tell you
more. The best information I have
seen on this topic comes from the
February 1985 edition of Country
Journal in which author Eliot Tozer
elaborates.
We have established that incan
descent lamps should not be used
alone or with fluorescent lights be
cause of their relative electrical inef
ficiency and their tendency to give
off heat. Fluorescent lights, how
ever, are efficient and do not release
extreme amounts of heat.
There are many types of fluores
cent lamps available to gardeners:
Daylight, Cool White, Warm
While, Natural, Wide Spectrum and
Gro-Lux. Os these, the Cool White
and Warm White, used together, are
excellent. Cool white bulbs emit
mostly blue wavelength light. Blue
light encourages slow, compact
plant growth. Warm white bulbs,
on the other hand, give off red rays
which make for taller, faster
growth. When combined in a two
light fixture, they provide a low
cost, nicely balanced, long-lasting,
efficient light. Using Daylight and
Natural lamps together will also
work, as will using cither Gro-Lux
or Wide-Spectrum alone, though
they may be more expensive than
Cool White and Warmer White
bulbs.
What about the intensity, or
brightness, of the light? Light in
tensity is a function of distance
from the light source. Most
seedlings will flourish with the
lamps hanging about eight to nine
inches above the tops of the plants.
Putting the light farther away than
12 inches from the plants is not
recommended.
Also, centering the seedlings un
der the light fixture is a good idea.
This is because the light intensity
is greater at a point directly under
the light source. Generally, a fix
ture with two four-foot bulbs will
adequately light an area four feet
long by a foot wide. If you set your
two fixtures, place them side by
side, since lamps so placed amplify
each other's output.
Once you’ve selected a lamp and
set it up for the right intensity, you
must provide the correct duration of
light for your plants. Most plants
should receive between 12 and 16
hours of light per day. Less than 12
hours will cause new leaves to de
velop slowly, and the plants will
not grow well. Providing more than
16 hours will likely interfere with
the plants' natural growth pro
cesses, turning them pale and
maybe even killing them. An inex
pensive electric timer is a good in
vestment to ensure that your plants
receive the exact duration of light
that is best for them.

The fuel you need is glucose, the

all the activity you do.
If you don't re-fuel with break
fast, your blood sugar level can
drop below the fasting level. This
can cause weakness, headaches,
dizziness and even fainting at worst.
At best, you won’t be operating at
peak performance. Your brain uses
glucose for energy too, so you can
see why breakfast-skippers don't do
as well on tests.
Carbohydrates raise your blood
sugar level the fastest. Examples of
carbohydrate foods arc hot or cold
breakfast cereals, breads and fruits.
Protein foods arc best at keeping
the level up for a long period of
time. Protein foods include milk,

cheese, eggs and meats. A combina
tion of the two arc best for keeping
you working at top level all morn
ing.
Many breakfast-skippers experi
ence the mid-morning slump. They
feel a need for food (and rightly so)
but they cure it with a snack.
Snacking's not bad if you cat foods
you would normally have at meals.
But too often snack choices arc
high in calorics and low in nutri
ents. This may be why many break

fast.
Breakfast-skippers arc less pro
ductive. When you skip breakfast,
chances are you'll spend more time
eating and less time working during
the rest of the day. Or you may just
be working at less than your best.
So help your children and your
self get ahead. Break the fast with a
healthy breakfast.
