Several Perry students write D.A.R.E. essays
(Editor's note: Perry fifth graders recently
completed D.A.R.E. classes taught by Perry
Police Officer Bill Hathcock. These are several
of the essays the students wrote at the end of
the class as a final project.)
Mv .D.A.R.E. Essay
D.A.R.E. has showed me better things in my life to do besides taking
drugs. D.A.R.E. has done a lot for me in many ways, things that I never
knew before. One way is that I don't have to hide my feelings about drugs
to my friends. Young people think taking drugs is cool, but my opinion
is you are more of a fool than cool. You can be cool without taking
drugs.
D.A.R.E. will effect my future in many ways, for instance just by me
not doing drugs. My friends will look at me and see how good and peace
ful my life is. I am not afraid to say no. I know that 1 can just be me
without taking drugs. D.A.R.E. has taught me to stick to my answer
when I say no to drugs and not give in. I am able to look at my friends
and tell them I am drug free and proud of it. D.A.R.E. can help future kids
by telling them the real meaning and actually show them a person using
drugs. Tell them that their lives could be worse. Get some sense into their
heads and get them scared about taking drugs. D.A.R.E. will help kids in
the future by letting them stand up and be bold in what they believe in.
I hope they believe not to take drugs. D.A.R.E. has actually showed us
we can be somebody without taking drugs or hanging around people that
do drugs. I would still use what I was taught best of all. If someone
would ask me to do drugs that gives me a greater excuse to tell them how
stupid they are to do drugs and that it is a crying shame that you would
mess up your life by doing drugs. I would make an excuse. I would say
something like I need to get home or my daddy would come looking for
me. I would walk away if they follow me, I would just say NO! then
walk away and be proud.-fly Regina Head.
D.A.R.E. Drug Essay
I believe D.A.R.E. is a good lesson because it teaches kids more about
drugs. D.A.R.E. has taught me about the different kinds of drugs.
D.A.R.E. will help me to say NO to drugs in the future. By the year
2010, half the nation will be on drugs unless we teach our kids not to use
drugs.
When I get in high school a friend will probably offer me a drug. I will
refuse immediately. I know many drugs, such as LSD, Pot and Ice. I hope
by the year 2030 no one will use drugs. People who use drugs say they do
it to get high, get high all right, high prison terms if they are caught. I
hope none of my friends never turn to drugs or alcohol. I never will.
Some people who use drugs get real sick or even die. People who use
drugs get addicted to them. How most people get their drugs is through an
international drug smuggling operation. Please help by not using drugs.-

D.A.R.E. has entertained me and educated me a the same time. Officer
Bill Hathcock tells how to take peer pressure and ways to say no.
D.A.R.E. isn't just another class; it involves work, but requires
something kids have, imagination. Now because of D.A.R.E even my
own mother couldn't get me to do drugs!
Officer Hathcock teaches us in a way we don’t get confused. We can
remember everything he says. Because of this, we can use this to help us
in the future. Even though we've been in D.A.R.E. only 16 weeks, we've
learned about stress, pressure, alcohol, compliments and rights. If we
follow these rules, our future will be perfect.
If people like Officer Hathcock keep caring, there will be no such thing
as drugs in the future. D.A.R.E. can and will help kids as long as some
people still care. 1 didn't know anything about drugs before fifth grade.
Now I know all there is to know about drugs and alcohol.
Now that D.A.R.E. has educated us; Vve can just say NO! Other way? I

avoiding them. AlcohoNarfd drugs are no problem to me or the rest of the
class .-By Brad Barfield.
D.A.R.E. has educated me in drugs and alcohol. I have learned to say no
to drugs. The class has taught me to be more proud of my work. I am bet
ter aware of my rights in an uncomfortable situation.
I feel that in the future I will be more aware of drugs and alcohol. I
think that 1 will be drug-free my whole life. Being a member of a gang is
not something I would ever want to do.
I feel that future kids will have fun but also learn from D.A.R.E. The
officers will teach future kids that they have the right to say no.
Hopefully the kids will learn a lot from D.A.R.E. I think the world will
be better for D.A.R.E. students in the future.
If a friend ever offered me drugs, I would always say no. I would try to
teach the same values as I have learned about drugs. D.A.R.E. has taught
me so well that I would never lake drugs.
1 would like to thank Mr. Hathcock for a very nice time. We had fun
and learned a lot. Because of him, we are now educated about drugs and al
cohol D.A.R.E. is the best way to say no '.-By Kyle Harold.
D.A.R.E. has done a lot for me. I learned that drugs can be addictive, or
may kill me or others. D.A.R.E. will affect my future by helping me
"Say No" to drugs. „
I think D.A.R.E. will affect future kids by teaching them to Say No
to drugs or alcohol. If one of my friends offer me drugs I will say no and
ask them why they want to use drugs and harm themselves and the people
around them. I will try to cope with them and help them to understand
about what drugs do to your body and then I would give them an example
like, "Be Drug Free" or "Be Smart, Don't Start.’’-By Debbie Hayes.
d.A.R.e, Essai
D.A.R.E. has taught me to say no to drugs. It has taught me different
ways to say no such as the cold shoulder. It has put us in situations in
class on role playing. I'm role playing people try to get others to use
drugs. You also get to practice saying no. What you need to do.in real
life!
I think that D.A.R.E. could effect my future by giving me a better
understanding of what drugs can do. And how drugs have killed people or
alcohol causing wrecks and problems with marriages. And if you take
drugs you are likely to drop out of school. You wouldn’t gp to college so
you probably wouldn't get a half way decent job.
I think D.A.R.E. might change the future of kids when the older kids
don't use drugs because they usually do what older kids do. When future
kids grow up, if D.A.R.E. worked there won't be as many drugs. Or
maybe a friend or relative dies, or is seriously inured.
When and if a friend asks me to use illegal drugs or alcohol I will either
make an excuse, say no, or I could turn him in to police custody. But for
now I just wish it tvon't happen .-Dane.
Being involved in the D.A.R.E. program has been a rewarding experi
ence for me. It has taught me the importance of being drug free. I now
know the dangers of drugs and alcohol and I also know something about
how to respond when I am approached with them. I have also made lots of
friends being in D.A.R.E., friends that I hope will continue to be my
friends and remain drug free as I plan to do.
Continuing to grow through D.A.R.E., I hope, will have a tremendous
impact on my futue. Remaining drug free is the biggest step I can take
towards preparing for a solid future. I will be able to contribute to my
family, my community and my country in a positive manner. Hopefully,
I will be able to help others who are trying to become drug free.
I hope D.A.R.E. is here to stay. It is a great tool for preparing us as
well as kids in the future about the dangers of drugs anda iC ohc, The
more we know, the more we will teach our kids and pretty soon, who
knows, D.A.R.E. could have the whole country drug frp#. ; ■

D.A.R.E. Essay
You may be wondering why I'm writing this essay on drug abuse and
drug resistance. Here's why. Take a good look around your home "Earth."
What do you see? Do you see people fighting, killing and stealing from
each other? Part of it is solely our fault, but a large proportion is the fault
of drugs.
Some drugs can cause a lot of damage such as making people hyper and
delerious. People who are like that can cause a lot of damage to
themselves and to others. There are other drugs that cause extreme
depression, drowsiness and hallucinations. These drugs cause equal
damage, as the other drugs mentioned.
D.A.R.E. is an organization that helps kids to resist abusing drugs and
alcohol. D.A.R.E. does exactly what it stands for. It leaches drug abuse
resistance education to kids.
D.A.R.E. has really helped me to understand why drugs are as danger
ous as they really arc. I mean "look," look at the destruction drugs have
caused. If that's not dangerous, I don't know what is.
As I grow older, D.A.R.E. will help me to say no. It will also help me
choose my friends very carefully. It will also help me to stay away from
alcohol and not to smoke cigarettes.
I think D.A.R.E. will help my friends also. It will help them turn
down drugs and alcohol. I like my friends. I don't want to lose them to
drugs.
If a friend offers me drugs, he's usually not a true friend. D.A.R.E. will
help me to decline those drugs. If my friend is really a friend, I’ll try my
best to help him.
What have we learned here? We have learned that drugs are destructive;
we have learned what D.A.R.E. can do for you. Most importantly we
have learned to say no!
This essay is dedicated to the outstanding law officials who made it
possible for me to learn and enjoy D.A.R.E.
Thank you Officer Hathcock and thank you D.A.R.E.-By Keith
Lucas.
D.A.R.E. Kssav
DA.R.E. has done a lot for me. It has taught me the differences between
good and bad drugs. It has also taught me what could happen if you use
drugs.
D.A.R.E. will affect my future because I know how to say "no" with
out any hesitation.
D.A.R.E. can help future kids by telling them stories about people or
showing them some movies.
If one of my friends asked me to try drugs I will know they're not my
true friends any way. 1 would think of the eight ways to say "NO" and use
one of them.
1 would like to thank Officer Hathcock for teaching me the dangers of
drugs and I know to say "NO". I enjoyed D.A.R.E. very much and I will
think about D.A.R.E. in sixth gradc.-By Madelyn.
D.A.R.E. has told me to never take drugs and has told me a wide vari
ety of excuses to give if someone ever offers me drugs. D.A.R.E. has also
told me a wide variety of excuses to give if someone ever offers me drugs.
D.A.R.E. has also told me to never lake drugs. I usually can trust my
friends in what they tell me or what they give me. So if a friend ever of
fers me drugs or alcohol 1 will think about D.A.R.E. and how it touched
my heart and told me never take drugs. If someone asks me to take drugs I
will say "no thanks" or one of the other great excuses that can help me in
my life. D.A.R.E. can also help children in the future by myself express
ing, influencing from what I learned. And maybe D.A.R.E. can help fu
ture kids by telling them and showing them what drugs can do to your
body and your emotions, and the way you treat others around you. I think
D.A.R.E. will help me in my life by believing in myself and being drug
free and telling people who try to get me to use drugs "no" or one of the
other excuses.
A SpdfciaFthdhk you" to someone special. I Carla Brock would ljke to
give officer Bill Hathcock honor for teaching me D.A.R.E. So I just
wanted to give an appreciation for all you do. Thanks !-ffy Carla

PA.R.E. Essay
What has D.A.R.E. done for me? D.A.R.E. has taught me a lot about
how not to abuse drugs. But one main thing that D.A.R.E. has taught me
was not to do drugs from day one. And to remember a friend who offers
drugs isn't a real friend.
How will D.A.R.E. affect my future? Well, what I've learned about
D.A.R.E. I can't ever abuse drugs. Drugs can kill. Using drugs is just like
committing suicide.
How could D.A.R.E affect future children? If children in the future lis
ten to D.A.R.E. this world could be more drug-free forever. And less
teens will gel shot or even killed by drugs.
What will 1 do when a friend offers me drugs or alcohol? First, I’ll say
"NO". Then I'll walk away. And never talk to him or her again.-By
John Abel.
D.A.R.E.
Today many children are forced with the problem of drugs. Drugs are an
every day part of life. D.A.R.E., which stands for Drug, Abuse,
Resistance, Education has taught many children how to notice and deal
with drugs when they are confronted.
In the future if I am ever offered drugs I know I can just say no.
D.A-R.E. has taught me that drugs are not a cool thing to do. I can walk
away without feeling pressured.
D.A.R.E. is leaching children early in life how harmful drugs can be. It
helps to keep drugs out of their lives so that when they have children of
their own, they can teach them. D.A.R.E. is helping to make drug abuse
a family matter. As I grow older, if any of my friends offer me drugs I
will say no. I will want to try to tell them how much harm drugs and
alcohol do to their bodies. I hope, being drug free, that I can help
someone make the same decision that drugs are a dead end street.-By Lee
Sinyard.
D.A.R.E. Essay
D.A.R.E. has made me realize that you don’t need drugs to be
successful or happy. D.A.R.E. has helped me sec that I can make my own
choices, take responsibilities and handle stress without drugs and alcohol.
D.A.R.E. has taught me that there are only a few people who take drugs,
and I can't let those few convince me to take drugs with them. Most of
all, D.A.R.E. has shown me that you can have fun and not take drugs.
D.A.R.E. has made me aware that drugs can’t solve your problems.
They just make more problems, and that drugs are a dead end. Drugs con
trol your life, so you don't. Drugs are a hazard to your health. I am not
going to let drugs decide my career. I am not going to let drugs take over
my mind and body. I want to live my life to the fullest, and achieve my
potential.
As the world gets tougher, kids are going to need all the help they can

get to stay drug-free and to see that they don't need any kind of drugs to
be successful. When enough kids say "NO!" to drugs, drugs will start to
disappear from our schools and other places where kids go to have fun and
meet friends.
D.A.R.E. students set examples for younger kids and adults. If kids
stand together against drugs, they can slowly erase drugs from our culture.
When D.A.R.E. students grow up and don't believe in drugs, they will
help their kids to believe in the same thing.
Because I have made the D.A.R.E. promise to say "No!” to drugs today,
tomorrow and forever, I will be able to say "No!" and walk away. I will
do my best to set a good example for those who are tempted by drugs and
to encourage my friends to join me and all those who lead drug-free
lives.-£Jy Jonathan Downing.
These past few months in D.A.R.E. have really taught me a lot about
drugs. I've learned how they can really mess up your mind and your body
and they can sometimes even kill you. I know there will always be some
one I can talk to if I need help or if a friend is in trouble. The role playing
taught me how to handle peer pressure, and what it feels like to be in a
bad situation. But the most important thing I learned was to be myself
and "just say no!"
With all the good things D.A.R.E. has taught me, I know that my
futue will be drug-free and wonderful, because I'm prepared for the obsta
cles that lie in my way.
I think D.A.R.E. will be even more important in the futue. There are
more and more drugs every day and more kids that could end up in trouble
because of them. We have to make sure that all kids are well educated
about drugs and know how to protect themselves. Without D.A.R.E.,
there might not be any future kids.
You asked what I would do if a friend offered me drugs or alcohol. First
of all, they aren’t my friend. I would tell them "Yeah right. My mind is
fine to waste. If you think you need drugs to get by, then you need some
serious help."
But, hopefully, no friend of mine would be stupid enough to even think
about taking drugs.-/#y Heather Toliver.
D.A.R.E. Essay
D.A.R.E. has done so such for me. D.A.R.E. has taught me to be more
careful in choosing my friends. It has taught me not to use drugs. I know
now not to get in a car with a drunk driver. D.A.R.E. means a lot to me.
It has taught me to have high self esteem and always feel good about my
self.
D.A.R.E. will help me not to use drugs. I can tell others how danger
ous using drugs and alcohol can be. I know now not to take unreasonable
risks.
If a child has high self esteem, D.A.R.E. will teach that child to keep
high self esteem. D.A.R.E. could change a child's idea about drugs and
alcohol. It can teach children not to get in a car with a drunk driver.
D.A.R.E. can teach children about drug abuse and how that can affect their
