When decorating, think of it as creating
Excitement runs through me
when I hear people use the term
"creating" when referring to decorat
ing their home.
I appreciate people who take the
initiative and start their own cre
ative ideas working. Once the deci
sion has been made to "create" one’s
own look, the individual will have
gained confidence and open the door
to imagination.
One should never decorate to
please people other than those who
live in the home. When creating a

Gardening

Jeffrey Restuccio, writing in the
August/September issue of Rower
and Garden magazine, passes along
some interesting thoughts on gar
dening with children. In fact, he
compares the garden to the home
video game. Before you turn the
page, let me explain.
Restuccio points out that home
video games have swept America's
youth, capturing their time and at
tention for hours, days and weeks at
a time. Video games, he says, are a
behavioral scientist's dream.
Behavioral psychology is based on
the premise of positive reinforce
ment; i. e., if a behavior is fol
lowed by a reward, the behavior is
likely to be repeated. After a video
game player zaps the first monster
on the screen, he wants to zap the
next; after a fisherman catches the
first fish, he wants to catch another;
and'after the first bean sprouts from
the ground, the gardener wants to
plant another. ,
Video games are designed to be
just difficult enough to allow mas
tery of one level of play to another,
keeping one playing for hours. We
can use, suggests Restuccio, a sim
ilar scheme for gardening.
He recommends establishing a
point system with levels of garden
activities for kids. Plant easy-to
grow vegetables such as snap
beans, radishes and tomatoes. Then,
each year, add more challenging ac
tivities to your child's gardening
list. You might try growing pump
kins and writing your child’s name
on each one as it forms. Have them
care for their "personal" pumpkins.
Get your children in the habit of
helping you in the garden for short
periods at every opportunity - even
is it is only for five minutes to
help pull weeds, hoe a section of a
row, or spread some fertilizer. Let
them help and go back to playing.
If they want to stay and help
some more, praise them and find a
small task for them to master. If
they want to go play, let them go.
Video games are designed with
colorful graphics, animation and
music. So does the garden. Give
your children opportunities to see
seedlings cracking the soii surface,
see the beautiful birds and flowers,
and hear the birds, crickets and
frogs.
Children love to accomplish a
task and prove they're "grown up."
Small successes have a big impact
on a child's self-esteem.
Establish a garden bed especially
for the children. Teach them how to
hold tools properly. Help them pre
pare their soil and plant their seeds.
And grow things they like.
Restuccio reminds us that coop
erating with nature instills an ap
preciation of its wonders. The back
yard becomes a sort of science ex
hibit, with nature as the master
teacher.
Try gardening with children
you’ll be glad you did.
Oh, and don't be upset if you
can't beat them, playing the video
games -1 can't either!
