Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rush

Info on tooth-colored fillings
Last week in this column, I ex
pounded on some of the virtues of
the materials that have improved
the comfort and usefulness of dental
amalgam. But there are some who
are concerned about possible side
effects of silver-mercury alloy. Still
others are appearance-conscious and
do not want a blackish-looking
filling in their mouth no matter
how far back the tooth is.
It is for those persons that I an
nounce, with great pleasure, some
of the improvements in the place
ment of tooth-colored fillings.
Tooth-colored fillings came into
dentistry quite a few years ago to
mixed reviews. The material used
was a combination of plastic and
quartz. Two paste-like components
were mixed together by a dentist
and placed into a tooth cavity where
they hardened. The setting time was
difficult to control and the material
was often a problem to manipulate
before it hardened.
One main concern with these fill
ings was their tendency to wear
down. If used on back teeth, the
chewing pressure exerted on molars

materials are more naturally tinted
easier to polish, easier to place be
cause they are less sticky, seal bet
ter microscopically and, best of all:
they have great resistance to wear
ing down.
Also improved (and very preva
lent in the present dental literature)
are the methods to adhere the com
posite to the tooth. "Binding" mate
rials are now available that physi
cally and chemically lock the plas
tic to nearly every mineral compo
nent of the tooth.
Composite plastic fillings are
generally not appropriate for teeth
with extensive damage but they are
an exciting and eye-pleasing alterna
tive available to many patients.

What type of exercise is
best for your teenager?
Whether you'd like to weigh less,
gain weight or stay the same, you
need physical activity-that is, exer
cise. Activity is part of the calorie
balance. In addition to burning up
calories, activity is necessary for
health. Exercise can help you cope
with stress and make you feel bet
ter.
Exercise builds strength by mak
ing the body more muscular. You
can have a normal weight or even
be underweight and still have too
much body fat if you don't exercise.
Too much body fat is not healthy.
So even if you're trying to lose
weight, exercise can make it easier
by burning more calories and by
building up muscle, which bums
more calories than fat.
Any kind of activity will bum
calories—even routine activities
such as climbing stairs or cleaning
your room. Certain types of exer
cise have other benefits as well.
Carlton,

referring to interior colors, but it is
a color that seems to be showing
up in many of our fabrics today.
Sometimes we are playing up one
of the other colors and we don’t no
tice "the-in-color", nevertheless it is
there, and it can be the undated
color introduced in a quiet manner.
I am still asked the old question,
"Will dark colors make a room look
smaller?” Yes, they will, but if you
are trying to make a large room ap
pear cozy, color will help you ac
complish the feel.
You can create anew look when
working with strong hues by using
three complementary colors in
rooms with adjoining walls and
unifying them with the same while
woodwork.
When you have created in your
mind the look you are wanting to
achieve, seek the help of a designer
to help you pull it together. I sug
gest you take pictures from
magazines that have the look you
are after, together with favorite col
ors when consulting with your de
signer. This not only saves you
time and money, it will give the
designer a good idea of your likes
and dislikes. A designer can keep up
from making costly mistake^.

Aerobic exercise, such as jogging,
jumping rope, skiing, swimming
and bicycling can make your heart
stronger and may help prevent heart
disease while burning calories.
Weight-bearing exercise, such as
walking or jogging, helps build
more bone and may help prevent
development of the bone-thinning
disease osteoporosis.
If you decide to start a regular ex
ercise program start slowly. You
don't want to be sidelined on the
second day with an injury. By start
ing slowly, you can monitor how
your body is responding. Select an
activity you enjoy so that you will
be more likely to keep- it up.

The best exercise for total fitness
is aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise
requires oxygen and uses large mus
cle groups like your arms and legs.
There are three components to aero
bic exercise programs: the warm
up; the exercise period; and the
cool-down. The warm-up should in
clude five to 10 minutes or slow
stretching (no bouncing) to help
prepare the body for the more vig
orous activity of the exercise pe
riod, which should include 20 to 30
minutes of steady continual activ
ity. During the cool-down, gradu
ally decrease the intensity of the ex
ercise. For example, if your exer
cise is rapid walking, part of your
cool-down could be walking at a
slower rate. The cool-down should
also include about five minutes of
stretches similar to the ones you did
during the warm-up. To strengthen
your heart, you should exercise in
this way three or four times a week.
