'Matinee' will not be a box office hit
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
John Goodman just can't star in a
successful movie. His "King
Ralph" was not royally received and
"The Babe" did not hit a homer at
the box office. Now we have
"Matinee,” a film in which
Goodman plays an inventive
moviemaker. Sorry John but this
one will send you scurrying back to
the safety of "Roseanne" one more
time.
The worst thing about "Matinee"
is that John Goodman is not the
star. Well at least his character is
not the focus of the film. That part
belongs to Simon Fenton who
plays Gene Loomis, a young man
living with his family at the Naval
Station in Key West, Florida.
The time is the 1960 sand the
blockade of Cuba has just been an
nounced. The people of Key West,
being only 90 miles away from
Cuba, are almost hysterical about
their city being bombed. Gene is
more concerned about the safety of
his father who is on naval patrol
than he is about the bombing.
Into town comes B-grade
moviemaker Lawrence Woolsey
(Goodman) and his girl
friend/assistant Ruth Corday (Cathy
Moriarty). They are there to show
his new film "Mant" to the crowds
of excited teenagers in the town.
"Mant" is a movie about a half man
half ant creature.
The film offers a tongue in cheek
look back at the horror films of
yesteryear but gums it all up with a

the high school crowd. There are
only brief shots of Goodman and

The best acting in the movie is

Goodman is slightly subdued as
Woolsey. The movie has him being
