Worker injured in fall while

Mark Conyers, a contract worker
hired to paint the inside of a Perry
water tower, is listed in serious
condition at the Medical Center of
Central Georgia after sustaining in
juries in a fall Wednesday.
Rescue workers took almost two
hours to rescue Conyers, who had
fallen more than 30 feet inside the
tower before hitting the bottom of
the tank. The tank had been drained
prior to the painting project. Had
water been in the tank, officials said
Conyers probably would have
drowned.
Conyers was one of three men
hired by the City of Perry to paint
the inside of the tank. County and
city firefighters and rescue teams
worked non-stop to get Conyers
help, but rescue attempts were made
more difficult by the smallness of
the access hole into the tank. The
space was so small a stretcher could
not be lowered into the tank.
After eliminating several possi
ble plans of action, Conyers was
lifted out of the hole by members
of the Technical Rope Rescue
Team, a unit of the Warner Robins

an EMT, was overcome by the
paint fumes and was taken to the
Houston Medical Center for treat

Perry firefighter Earl Nelson was
one of the workers inside the tank
with Conyers. Nelson said Conyers
remained conscious the whole time,
but that he was in a great deal of
pain.
