Houston County Young Farmers
sponsored the 17th Annual Houston
County Hog Show last Saturday at
the Agricenter for 4-H and Future
Fanners of America club members
aged nine to 18.
Ten-year-old Perryan Madelyn
Johnson, a student at Momingside
Elementary, won the prize for the
Grand Champion pig, which
weighed 270 pounds.
Johnson’s pig was auctioned and
sold at $1.30 per pound by Cross
road’s Bank. Each participant was
allowed to pick one of their two
pigs and auction it after the show.
“It was very competitive like it
should be," Young Farmer Coordi
nator Tim Lewis said.
“The hogs looked real good, and
the kids did a good job showing
them.”
Lewis said a lot of haird work
goes into getting the hogs ready for
the show. “The kids have to feed
and walk the hogs.”
. The youngsters must keep records
about their feed mixtures and daily
exercising, he said.

“We are using anew program

where each special child chooses
another student in the school to be
his friend for this week,” explained
Principal Kim Schoening. “The

Kings Chapel has four special

having the special ed classes at the
school help other students learn to
interact with children having special
needs.
“All of our students are main

education classes, so they all learn
to interact together,” she said. “I
feel that we’ve done a good job in

teaching the children to all work

Assistant Superintendent for
Pupil Services Luann Purcell said
setting aside this special week helps
promote awareness of programs in
the school system.
“Many people in the community
have no idea of the scope of ser

“Our services revolve around the in

it’s good for the community to be
more aware of that”
