taught her a great deal about the
court system when she came into it
in 1961. Additionally, Miss Ruby
was known for her staunch Demo
cratic stand and involvement in lo
cal politics.
“Miss Ruby was the political
party in the south end of the
county,” said Annis. “If you were
running for office, you wanted her
support and blessing because she
sure worked hard for those she be
lieved in.”
Lamar Christopher, ordinary
court judge following John Hodges,
remembered that Miss Ruby taught
him about the judgeship before he
took office. He also recalled that
she had great character and strength.
“Miss Ruby was the kind of per
son that epitomized love, honor and
respect,” Christopher said.
In addition to her political influ
ence in the county, Miss Ruby was
known for her knowledge of Perry’s
history and was widely respected as
the authority on Perry history.
“She had more knowledge of
Perry and Houston County than
anyone else,” said long-time friend
Willie Dean NeSmith. “I never had
a more treasured friend and will
miss her.”
Relative and friend Virginia Ma
son also commented on Miss
Ruby’s work as Perry’s historian.

I've seen the devastation caused to individuals and their
families because of drinking and driving. I know that
Senate Bill 27 will have an effect on people. It will save
lives.
Asa young child I said I would never drink, but as a
teenager I took my first drink. Through high school my
desire to go to college was replaced with a desire to party.
One year later driving home drunk from a prom party, I ran
off the road at 100 mph and hit a telephone pole.
My body was thrown backward through the windshield,
cutting my back severely. I was laying in a puddle of
blood, sure I would bleed to death. I had broken my neck.
I was paralyzed from the shoulders down. For the next
four hours, I lay in the field, unable to move, unable to feel
anything.
As an athlete, I was used to hard work, used to chal
lenges, but when the ambulance came to take me to the
hospital, I was in for the fight of my life. I spent the next
eight and a half months in the hospital, almost died twice.
I know that teenagers would rather drive than drink.
Adults, too. Some people say, "How can you take away
their license after only one offense, that's real hard oh
them?" I say, "Fifteen years in a wheelchair is hard."
We believe that lie that it won't happen to us-just some
one else. Not true. Say yes to Life. Say yes to the future of
Georgia's citizens and please pass Senate Bill 27 to include
first offenders in Automatic License Suspension.
Sincerely,
Richard Gallaspie

Buttmanns thank firefighters
who helped during their crises
Dear Editor:
Two weekends ago proved to be quite an eventful one at
our house.
Firstly, I had a fall from my horse and was able to meet
some of the volunteers from the Hayneville/Grovania Fire
Department as they responded to the call and helped me into
the ambulance. The following night we had a fire at our
house. It started in the chimney and spread to the attic and
roof. I had to call on the Hayneville Fire Department once
again who responded immediately and their quick action
helped save our house. Their concern for the contents of
the house was very much appreciated as well as their con
cern for us.
This is just a way to say a very big thank you to all who
responded at our time of crisis, it's nice to know you are
there.

county, and she knew everything
there was to know about Perry’s
background,” Mason said. “She was
a legend in this county and she will
be greatly missed.”
Active in Perry United
Methodist Church since 1924, Miss
Ruby was a member of the Suzan
nah Wesley Sunday School Class
and the United Methodist Women.
She was the church historian and
was instrumental in getting the his
torical room established at the
church.
A member of the United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy since she
was 18 years old. Miss Ruby was a
member of the Sgt. Clinton C.
Duncan Chapter of the UDC for
more than 70 years. She served as
the chapter’s president from 1928-
1930 and was awarded the Jefferson
Davis and Winnie Davis medals for
her outstanding years of service to
the organization.
With the passing of Miss Ruby
comes a passing of an era in Perry.
Miss Ruby stood for everything she
wanted the city of Perry to stand for
and often said Perry was a great
town because of its atmosphere that
kept people concerned with the city,
the church and education. Her influ
ence in each of those areas was
greatly felt and will be sorely
missed.
