Lu Mellin and Richard Smith work on a song for Perry
Players’ musical “Fiorello!”. Both were recently
selected as Honorary Board members of Perry
Players.
Mellin and Smith honored
by Perry Players' board
Several years ago, the Perry
Players created a way of recognizing
individuals who had provided valu
able assistance over a long period of
time.
President Dennis Hooper ex
plained, "Our Board of Governors
wanted to honor a few individuals
who aren't on the Board, but who
are always there when we need
them. So, we established an
'Honorary Board' to show our ap
preciation to them."
"The first Honorary Board mem
bers were Carol Strandburg and
Sally Stanley. Both still contribute
much to Perry Players. Carol is di
recting the current show, 'Fiorello!',
and Sally is choreographing the
dance numbers."

What a birthday surprise
Lula King received her first birthday cake on her 59th birthday on Feb. 19.
Her friend Joyce Sirmans gave her the cake not knowing it was her first.
“This is the best thing that happened to me down through the years,” King
said. Her cake read, “Happy Birthday Lu Lu.” Sirmans said, “it thrilled me as
much as her knowing she was pleased.”
PHS play group needs donations from Perryans
Getting a group of 35 students to
Arlington, Va. along with a set,
costumes and sound system has
been no small task, and certainly no
small expense. Perry High's State
Championship Winning One-Act
Play "The Robber Bridegroom” is
scheduled to compete next week at
the Southeastern Theatre
Conference, in hopes of continuing
on to this year's national finals.
With a charter bus scheduled to
pull out of Perry early March 4, and
motel reservations costing over
SI,OOO a night for this four-day
trip, the cast and crew still find
themselves $2,300 short of their
goal.
"We have received so many gen
erous donations from the people of
Perry so far," offered Chris
Gillsepie, the show's director. "We
just hope there are some additional
groups who will want to lend their
suppt#lso otir students."

day of prayer
World Day of Prayer, a day on
which millions of Christian women
all over the globe join in prayer,
traditionally takes place on the first
Friday in March and is translated
into hundreds of languages.
In Perry the service will be held
at the Perry United Methodist
Church March 5 at 3:30 p.m. Six
area churches will be participating
in this ecumenical service.
This year's World Day of Prayer
service was written by women of
Guatemala on the theme, "People
of God: Instruments of Healing."
The Guatemalan women share their
background and experiences. They
described conditions in their count#
and their desire to be instruments of
healing to solve some of their prob
lems using Biblical and present day
stories of healings.
Producer Lisa Pryor added "This
really is a once in a lifetime expe
rience. We plan to take the cast into
Washington, D.C. while we're
there, and many of these students
will never again have a chance to
see our capitol."
Many businesses and civic

the fundraising efforts of Perry

would like to thank the following
groups for their generous donations:

Local employees
will begin training
By ROBIIN BOOKER
Staff Writer
The Perry Convention and Visi
tors Bureau Board determined
Thursday to begin formulating a
plan to provide hospitality training
for Perry employees who deal with
tourists.
The board discussed ways to im
plement hospitality training for
front-line employees working in the
Perry area. The training would serve
to inform Perry workers of where
attractions are in Perry and how to
direct tourists to those attractions.
“We need to make sure people
know what we have here, and that
our people know how to be friendly
and helpful,” said Board Member
Tom Daniel. “Half the people in
Perry probably don’t even know the
Welcome Center is out here and
what it’s purpose is, and we need to
address that.”
Once the board has devised a
plan of action for getting the em
ployees trained, the details of im
plementing the plan will be final
ized. Area business owners will be
involved and will need to be con
sulted as to the convenience of giv
ing their employees time to partici
pate in the training.
“If we can let visitors to Perry
know what we have to offer, they
may choose to stay with us two
nights instead of only one night,”
said Board Member Trudi Warren
“If we don’t let them know, they
may not even stay one night”
The board also voted to change
its regularly scheduled meeting
from the third Thursday in each
month to the fourth Thursday of
each month.
