House Burned.
On last Thursday evening the
home of Parks Pierce colored was
horned. He lived at the old home
place of Mr. Bill Whelohel iu
Whetchel district. Curious to
soy there was about two thousand
pounds of seed cotton packed in
the porch, and after the house was
burned they raked off the coals
and saved nearly half the cotton.
The Newspaper of To-day.
Newspapers have undergone nu
merous changes since first intro
duced to the world. What they
now are a clever writer tells us,
t» follows: "The newspaper of to
day is a library, a history, a proph
ecy and dictionary, a timetable,
>*. romauoe, a cook book, a guide,
t hortosoope, an art critic, politi
cal review, a ground plan of the
dvilized world, in fact a low-priced
nedmmin parvo. It is a song
md a sermon, a circus, an obitu
ary, a picnic, a shipwreck, a sym
phony in solid brevier, a medley
«f life and death, a grand aggrega-
ion of man’s glory and shame.
It is, iu short, a bird’s eye view of
*11 the magnanimity of meaness,
he joys and poverty of the world.
the journalist, the man who
oakes the newspaper, is equally
etnarkable in his way, for he is a
hort-haud reporter, a poet and a
.ovelist, a statesman, a lawyer, a
it divine and a dramatic, a musical
rtistic and literarly critic, and
il of these to be able to earn his
iaily bread.”
Mr. Walter T. Abbott, aged 26
died last Thursday at the home of
his brother-in-law, Mr. P. N. Par
ker of this city. He was sent to
Warsaw, Ga., for interment Sat
urday. He was a son of Capt. A.
T. Abbott of Atlanta.
