Can’t Get Readers.
There is a general complaint all
over Hall county that the pupils
in the public schools cannot g*t
first and second readers, due to the
tact that the publishers have failed
to supply the local dealers. TMb
is workiug a great hardship upon
the people and their children, many
of whom can attend school only
during certain seasons of the year.
The News does not know exactly
what kind of contract the school
book commission has with tho pub
lishers of the various school books,
but We do know that if it hasn’t a
good and sufficient bond for the ful
fillment of eaoh contract it should
have; and, if suoh a bond or bond*,
exist, they should be forfeited }t
the publishers do not supply the
dealers with a sufficient quantity
of such books as each publisher
agreed to furnish. We are reliably
iuformed that there are a number
of children out of school today be
cause their parents are unable to
purchase such books as are needed
from the local dealers, who say
the school book publishers have
failed to supply the demand for
them.
Spelling Bee Saturday,
Next Saturday is the time for
the spelling contest between the
pupils from the county schools.
One representative' from each
school will meet at. the court house
Saturday when the ohampiouship
of the county will be- fought for.
The contest will, doubtless, do
great good to the students as if
aroueeB interest in spelling, and
each one will do his utmost to win
the prize. The teachers’ institute
met here last Saturday, when the
fiual arrangements were made for
the contest. The public iB invited
to attend.

duckling, even when he doesn’t date
back farther than day before yester
day. When it comes to swimming he
is a sight reader, and be is more de

be Is so constructed and flat of back
that If by any chance he gets turned
wrong side up he cannot turn over
again unaided, and unless help comes
he lies there and paddlles the air with
bis little feet until he fans himself to
death. He is cheerful about it, though,
and makes no outcry, apparently think
ing that because his legs arc working
be is swimming along according to
Hoyle.
My child, a little duck.on his back
and the average after dinner orator on
his feet are both deserving of the sym
pathy which we should bo ever ready
to bestow on the unfortunate, and
therefore we should sign all petitions
that are presented to us looking to the
establishment of a commission to turn
little ducks over and loquacious gen

are prevented from paddling and gab
bling themselves to death they may
be of some use hereafter.—Tom Wat

“If there Is much virtue in tho doc
trine of Inherited qualities, why is
there such a vast difference, as we see
In a multitude of instances, between
brothers or between sisters?" said an
observer of men and things. “Years
ago I begun to make a study of this
matter, and I have a book at home
filled with cases bearing on fraternal
disparities I know of u learned jurist,
and a most excellent inau from every
point of view, who has a brother in the
penitentiary. I knew of a family of six
brothers, three of whom wove men of
the highest social and business stand
ing, while the other three were knaves
and vagabonds, outcasts from society.
They had the same father and mother,
tho same moral and intellectual train
lug. Whence tho difference? I know of
two sisters, ono of whom is an angel
and the other a totally depraved crea
ture. Inherited qualities often exist
and aro Influential in tho formation of
character, but tho law of their trans
mission is wholly uncertain."-Wash

Capt. Pillow Resigns.
Captain W. N. Pillow, who has
been captain of the Candler Horse
Guards for several years, tendered
his resignation Monday night to
take effect as soon as his successor
can be elected and qualified. His
resignation went to the Adjutant
General Monday, and an election
will likely be ordered for next
Tuesday night. There is much
regret among the troop and the
people of the city that Captain
Pillow is no longer to head the '
company. He goes to Mississippi
about September 1st. to make his
future home. -He is a splendid
military man, and has a wide ac
quaintance in the state.
It is understood that 1st. Lieu
tenant Ezra Pilgrim will be
chosen Captain to succeed Pillow,
and that Sergeant Harry Walker
will be chosen 1st. Lieutenant to
succeed Pilgrim. Both are splen
did military men and are popular
with the troop.

Motley’* Flr*t London Dinner.
When Mr. Motley, the historian, wa3

trouble at his first dinner party. Mr.
Leveson-Gower says: “At that time
couples were sent in to dinner in pntrs,
but nobody’s place was fixed. Unfor
tunately tho Turkish ambassador was
allotted to Ludy Waidegrnve, who did
not care to have him as her neighbor.
She consequently told him that his
place was at the other side of tho tU'
ble. He, with oriental politeness, did
as she bade him and sat down opposite
to her. This up3et the whole arrange

A frame house can be kept in good
order for a hundred years, if painted
with the L. & M. Paint about oocein
ten to fifteen years. This is because
the L. & M. Zinc hardens the L. & M.
White Lead, and gives the paint extra
ordinary life. It also makes it cover
an enormous surface, so that four gal
lons L. & M. and three gallons linseed
oil will paint a moderate sized house,
Actual cost when ready for use about
f 1.20 per gallon.
James 8. Barron, President Manches
ter Cotton Mills, Rock Hill, S. C.,
writes:
“In 1883 I painted my residence with
L. & M. It looks better than a great
many houses painted three years ago."
