A HOPEFUL OUTLOOK. From every section come reports of fine crops, and a general good feeling among the farming classes. From the trade centers come words of encouragement and expressions of confidence for the future. The outlook, therefore, is indeed indications THE GEORGIA CRACKER. Dove shooting is a sport that may now be enjoyed; The game law of Georgia allows doves to he killed from August 15th to April 1st, and therefore the season opened last Monday. A number of Gainesville hunters have cleaned up their- guns and have taken advantage of the opportunity of shoot ing doves again. It is a sport of rare enjoyment, and those who enjoy'shoot- ing are anticipating much fun for the next few weeks. The Bchool Jbook question is evi dently a very live one. Candler for Governor seems to have struck a popular chord. And our rains haven’t been bad. McKinley’s reign may be worse. The Georgia Cracker gives the news. Read it and keep posted. FIRST BAPTIST. Gainesville is the finest resi dence town in Georgia'. As a bus iness point it has few equals. Just at present dominoes seems to be the national game so far as Gainesville is concerned. At the hotels it is the pastime, and it is not an unusual thing to find old men hard at it on a game of dominoes. It is a nice quiet way. of passing the time. On the other side is the date 1768 IR., and the let- in the center sion appropriated $600,000 from general taxes for support of the common schools for 1897 and $1,000,000 for 1898. The tax to raise the sum for 1897 the law pro vides shall be levied and collect ed the present year, but gives the governor and comptroller general no authority to levy anything this year for 1898. The $1,000,000 fox 1898, the law further provides, shall be levied and collected in 1898. If the legislature at its next session does not change the law the school fund will get the $600,000 for 1897 and the $1,000,- 000 for 1898. “Heretofore the special tax col lected early in the ye^r and one- half of the monthly rental- of the State road, A Georgia exchange gives the following remedy for anarchism: Hang the long-haired cranks to the first lamp post. JOHNSON & DORSET, NEW BRIDGE REVIVAL, The question of building additional recitation rooms to-the college—the centrali public school building—has been discussed among those interested for sometime. -However, nothing defi nite has yet been done, and what de cision the board of education and mem bers of council will reach about the matter cannot be forecasted. If the additional rooms are added the branch schools will be closed and . all the work of the public schools will be carried on under one roof. Many contend that this would be far more satisfactory than the- present Arrangement. A revival service was begun at New Bridge church last night and will con- tinne two or three weeks. Rev. Mr. Kimsey is the pastor and he will' no doubt, have a good meeting. To-mor row morning the pastor will baptize a number who have recently joined. New Bridge is only five miles from Gainesville and probably several peo ple from the city will attend some .of the meetings and the baptizing. The Pennsylvania striking min ers have not struck it rich. They are-much worse off now than when they went out on a strike. which form part of the school fund, have been nearly sufficient to meet the quarterly payments due the teachers for the first, second and third quarters, but inasmuch as the appropria tion from the general taxes for 1896 is so much- larger than for previous years and as the general taxes will not be collected and paid into the treasury before De cember of that year rtbe increase of $400,000 will - ; not be available until December unless the Legisla ture makes some provisions to cover the same. While the legis lature increased the school fund $400,000 for 1898 it provided no means for teachers to get the ben efit of the increase until the last quarter of the year. This over sight can and doubtless will be remedied by appropriate legisla tion this fall.” The Georgia editors are writing cheerful editorials.' The fall sea son will soon be here, and they arelooking for subscription money. Perry, the murderer of Beley Lanier, did not swing last Wed nesday; Governor Atkinson has respited him until September 8th. It is always encouraging to note the progress of any town, bufcwhen your home town keeps pushing ahead it is especially gratifying. Gainesville will probably have a new hotel and a new street rail way by next summer.. Who says this is not a growing little city? The Southern Railway will run a special excursion to Asheville, N. C., Thursday August 36th. The train leaves Gainesville at 10:15 a. m. and ar rives at Asheville at 6 p. m. The trip is a delightful one and no doubt many will take advan tage of the low .rate to visit the* “Land of the Sky.” A rpad congress, -composed of the road commissioners of Hall and adja cent counties, was held in Gainesville yesterday. Quite a number of commis sioners were here and doubtless'much- good will result from the meetings which was held at the court house: Speeches were made by different eona- misioners who told of how to keep the public roads in the best condition at the least expense. "” t ; ; The meeting was held in the interest of good roads, and was gotten up by Dr. E. E. Dixon, Mr. Frank T. Davie, and Mr. H. T. Martin, Hall county’s efficient commissioners, with the assis tance of commissioners from other counties. This is the first- “road congress” held -in the' state.. .Gainesville ..and.
