A THANKSGIVING SYMPHONY.
Written for The Cracker.
AIT THAMXfleiVTWO.
T«d«T, dear Lord, I raisa mj thankful
heart la gratitude to Thee
For many mercies and for blessings
manifold and free, ’
For the life-full air.
For the world se fair,
For warm blood throbbing, bounding
from my heart.
For bonyancy that youth and health
impart,
For all the joys of pleasant sense Thou
gavest me!
I thank Thee, Lord, for new conceptions,
newer thoughts,that came to me,
For revelations of Thy light and truth
and what shall be,
For the way alone
In the duties shown,
For trial’s tempest and temptation’s
gast,
That made ’me stronger in the
strength of trust,
And fed my feeble faith and filled my
heart with thoughts of Thee!
But most of all, dear Lord, I thank
Thee for Thy still, small voice,
That brought me peace) when I had
made Thy way my choice,
For the spark of love
From the fires above
That touched and set my soul aglow
with zeal,
And fired my life with love—the
Spirit’s seal—
With love for every man and Thee—in
this I do rejoice!
THE REVISED VERSION.
Love lived with his sweetheart in
a cottage.
There was a knock at the door.
It was opened and Want came in.
Then Love jumped out of the window
But it was only to secure his axe he
had left in. a log. •
Then he came back and with sturdy
blows beat off the intruder.
Love lives in a mansion now.
And his sweetheart is a queen.
THE DIFFERENCE.
I saw Ambition standing starving in
the street,
While sleek patricians careless passed
him by.
Regardless of the proud-like, hectic
flush and fever heat
And death-bright glitter from his
soul-lit eye.
While fat Success assorted cooly on
his desk
The invitations multiplied to dine
With nabobs, princes, magnates—all
who gladly ask
To pile their sacrifices on his shrine!
UNCI.E TORE’S GRATITUDE.

HER TALENT.
Once the gods called the sons of men
together for the purpose of distributing
among them certain gi !ts and talents.
And Woman came also among them.
When the gods had given to men the
most-coveted gifts (for the gods have
masculine conceit) and it came Woman's
turn, they asked what talent she de
sired.
And she said, “Give rae the talent of
loving.”
So they did.
And ever since she has ruled the
world, for love is “the greatest thing
in the world.”

Take all the mystery of night.
Compare it with her looks, so cunning—
wise—
And heaven star-lit, unfathomable,

Is not so deep as depths within her

And still above theca all I higher

The truthful message from her glad,

SEMINARY ECHOES.

A Happy Thanksgiving for the
Students and Faculty.
Thanksgiving came, and the girla - en
joyed a holiday. - Roast turkey and
cranberry sauce bring to ns visions of
Christmas and this Thanksgiving day
does but remind us of the greater
pleasure in store for some of us—of vis
iting home and loved ones during the
holidays. And yet while a visit home
brings pleasure and happiness, it is
doubtful if many of us should go home
during the short vacation given us?
They say that these are troublous
times financially aud there is scarcely
a girl in the Seminary whos parents are
not making sacrifices to keep her here.
Why then this foolish expenditure of
money and time merely for two or three
days pleasure. For every girl in the
Seminary to go home daring Christmas
would require^ at least $1350. How
much better devote this to some Christ
mas work or charity.
The Seminary is becoming very
jealous of Mrs. Ham and Miss Lucile
who have secured in winning the affec
tions of Miss Meritt to so great an ex
tent that she spends each Sunday and
Monday with them at their pleasant
home near the city. No, we will not
say that we are jealous. We are glad
to loan to Mrs. Ham, our friend and
teacher for we feel that in the great
sorrow which a mysterious Providence
has sent upon the family of Col. Ham,
Miss Merritt with her sympathizing
nature and sweet Christian spirit has
been a help and an inspiration to the
grief stricken family.
The library is rapidly becoming one
of the features of the Seminary. The
room set apart for it is a very pretty
one, and neatly furnished. We need
more books and a library building.
Why will not some good citizen of
Gainesville or Hall county donate a
thousand or twenty-five hundred dol
lars to this cause and have the library
named for him. His name would be
perpetuated for all time in the minds
and hearts of the yonng women of the
state. '■
The faculty ..concert was a briliant
success and we have cause to feel proud
of our Conservatory department. The
receipts were about $15 which was used
to help pay for the busts recently
bought for the library.
We again rise to ask what has beeome.
of the Signal? We miss it. It fills a
place in our college life that nothing
else can take. We understand that
editors were elected: what I
of them?
