Book Reception. There was a “Book Reception” at the Seminary last night for the benefit of the library. Each person was expected to bring a book, and thereby help in crease the list of publications m the library. Mrs. Bloomstin and Miss Merritt received the guests and made the reception a very pleasant one. It was Cold. About the coldest weather of the winter was felt this week. Wednesday was an exceedingly disagreeable day, and nobody except those who were compelled to go out showed up on the streets. So far the winter has been very mild, and a good deal of disagree able weather is anticipated. Hood’s Cone to New York. # Mr. John M. Hynds left Monday for New York where he has gone to pur chase a big line of spring goods for the J. G. Hynds Company. He makes’a trip to New York two or three times a year, and is one of the best buyers that visits the markets. Mr. Hynds will probably not return until the lat ter part of next week. Back from Washington. Colonel Howard Thompson is back from a trip to Washington where he spent several days on private business. He had a very pleasant trip, but will no doubt like Washington better when he goes there as the representative of the people of the ninth congressional district. There was no political sig nificance attached to his trip. New Street Car. Mr. D. E. Evans’ new street car has been completed and was put on the line several days ago. It is a splendid car, and is well heated and comfortably constructed. The car presents a, nice appearance and doubtless Mr, Evans line will be more popular than ever. The car was built'by Messrs. G. W. Walker & Son. Executive Committee to Meet. The executive committee of the Hall County Sunday School Association will meet in the county school commission er’s office at the court house Saturday, January 29th. Pool, near Lula, last August. The trial has been set for Monday in the superior court, and will likely attract a good deal of attention. The circumstances of the killing are fresh in the minds of the public, it being remembered that Cape stabbed Pool to death in a difficulty about a young lady. Nothing Like “Good Luck,” Mr. W. W. Ipark of Atlanta, repre senting “Good Luck” baking powder, was in the city several days recently. A solid train of thirty-seven ears of “Good Luck” baking powder was sent from Richmond January 4th, twenty cars of which went direct to Atlanta, and the remainder was sent to differ ent other southern cities. By Miss Lewis at the Auditorium Miss Ada Evelyn Lewis, who won the hearts of all of our people by her charming manners and delightful reci tations during last summer's Chautau qua, will give a recital ‘ at the Audi torium next Friday night, the 28th We want everybody in Gainesville who can possibly do so to attend this recital first, because all who attend will be richly repaid for so doing by the real enjoyment that the entertainment will afford them, and second because Miss Lewis, a most worthy young lady, is endeavoring by her own efforts to take another course in one of our great schools of oratory. She is a southern girl of unusual talent and merit, and we sincerely hope that all our people will hear her and guarantee that her entertainment will be one of the best ever heard in Gainesville. Ordinary Rudolph has been giving the indigent soldiers their checks this week as they called for them. The checks are for $60 each, and number forty-five. Judge Rudolph is also pre paring the blanks for the wounded soldiers and widows. Postponed. The celebration of Lee’s birthday was postponed because of the very bad weather Wednesday. The exercises were to have been held in the Audi torium at the Seminary, and a nice program had been arranged. bids for a convict commission desiring Prison Commission Wants Land. Elsewhere in this paper is found the advertisement for farm, the prison to purchase not less than three thou sand cad not more than five thousand acres of land. Bids will be received until March 15th. and any one having lands for sale will do well to read the advertisement and submit a bid, fol lowing the instructions therein set forth. Pulled Moonshiners. United States Deputy Marshals Berg strom, Landers and Martin have made several raids recently, and have made some very good hauls. Monday they brought in Joe Wilson', who lives in the upper portion of Hall. Floyd and Henry Shellnut of White, were also arrested, all being charged with illicit distilling. They were carried before Judge Gaston, who bound them over under a bond of $200 each. The stills destroyed were not very large ones. In Florida. Auditor G. H. Fuller and Captain Clark of the Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern railroad are in Florida on a pleasure trip, and will not return to the city before about the first of Feb ruary. Both gentlemen are faithful and efficient officers of the road, and deserve the rest they are now enjoying. Mr. T. M. Bryson is in charge of Cap tain Clark’s train in the latter’s absence. The case of George Priese; col., vs. the Southern Railway 'o., is on trial in the superior court. Priese is suing for $1,999 damages for loss of leg ard other injuries sustained at Lula De cember 24th, 1896. The case went to the jury.late yesterday afternoon.
