Mr. C. F. W. Gunther has had a nice
addition made to his building on Main
street. The twenty foot addition gives
him much more room and greatly im
proves the building. Mr. Gunther now
has a splendid building.
Mrs. S. A. Wallace of Gainesville, who
has been visiting the family of Mayor
\y a. Coleman of Carrollton, has gone
to Amerieus to visit her daughter. By
her charming personality she won many
friends in Carrollton who regretted ex
ceedingly to see her leave.
The family of Mr. E. C. Chastain left
Thursday morning for their future
home in Indian Territory. Their house
hold goods were sold at auction Tues
day. Mr. Chastain expects to engage
in stock raising and farming in Indian
Territory with his son, who now re
sides there.
Candler Club at Buford.
A very large and enthusiastic Candler
club has been organized at Buford.
The town is almost a unit for Candler
and the county will roll up a very large
majority for the “Plow Boy from
Pigeon Roost.”

Death.
Mr. Robert Well6 died at his home
on Rice street Wednesday afternoon of
pneumonia. He was fifty years old
and had been sick sometime. Eight
children surviye him. Undertaker
Dorsey sent the remains to Atlanta for
interment Thursday.
Attendance Good.
Prof. J. W. Marion states that the
attendance at the public school is still
good, and over four hundred students
are now enrolled. Teachers and pupils
are hard at work and everything is
moving along smoothly. The attend-
tance is unusually good this term.
New Operator.
The Gainesville Telephone Company
has employed Miss Emma Sisk as
operater. Mr. Oliver requests the pat
rons to make necessary allowances
until she gets thoroughly acquainted
with her duties, which will be only a
short time. There are a large number
of subscribers and the exchange is'
growing in popularity.
Executive Committee Meeting.
The executive committee of the
Candler club will meet at the court
house in Gainesville next Tuesday
March 8th, at 12 o’clock. Eyery mem
ber of the committee from the county
is expected to be present and meet
with the central committee, of which
Dr. J. W. Oslin is chairman and Mr. J.
N. Dorsey is secretary.
Third Degree Conferred.
The Gainesville lodge No. 219, Free
and Accepted Masons held an interest
ing meeting Tuesday evening at which
time the third degree was conferred.
A number of visitihg brethren were
present and enthused the members.
The lodge is in excellent cendition and
will soon be ensconsed in new quarters
in the Dean building. The Gainesville
Masons are enthusiastic workers.

Deputy Collector E. L. Bergstrom
has been a very busy ma r ^ for several
days past. He has visited Cornelia,
Winder, Hoschton, Lawrenceville and
various other places getting his reports
of the revenue business for the last
quarter in shape. Illicit distilling in
Northeast Georgia has been flourishing
the past several months, as usual.

Will Probably Preach Tomorrow.
It is very probable that Rev. J. M.
White will fill his pulpit at the First
Methodist church tomorfow. It has
been several months since he has
preached on account of serious illness.
It will be a source of great satisfac
tion to the members of his church and
his many friends generally to see him
out again. He has had a very trying
time and everyone will welcome him
back to his pulpit again.
Killed Mr. Walter Strickland.
The boiler of Messrs. Walter and Ed
Strickland, who have been operating a
sawmill about eight miles east of
Buford, near Hog mountain, exploded
Tuesday, killing Mr. Walter Strickland
and mortally wounding Mr. Pern Maul
din. Two other men were badly
burned, but it is thought they will
recover. Both men are known in
Gainesville and their friends regret to
hear of the accident.

Gainesville Headquarters.
Colonel Candler will open his head
quarters in Gainesville as soon as his
term of office expires as Secretary of
State on March 3lst. Col. E. T. Brown
of Athens, will be in charge of the
headquarters for the first tour of duty,
anp will be succeeded by such friends
of Colonel Candler’s as he desires. Im
mediately after Colonel Candler goes
out of office he. will begiu an active ag
gressive campaign, and will stump the
state in the interest of his candidacy.
He is daily receiving encouraging let
ters from the people over the state and
everything indicates his successful
nomination. Colonel Candler is a hard
fighter, and he will soon beg-in active
work.
Snakes Galore.
While Messrs R. B. Hardie and An
derson Loggins were digging post holes
for a fence near Colonel Sanders resi
dence on south Main street one day this
week they dug up forty-eight snakes.
The fence is being run across a piece
of bottom land and it appears that the
snakes have made this a winter rendez
vous. The holes are not more than a
foot square, and the fact that forty-
eight snakes were dug up from only
one hundrd post holes leads to the con
clusion that the earth . in that immedi
ate vicinity is full of reptiles.

Prof. Van Hoose has decided to donate
the entire net proceeds of The Boston
Ideals engagement to the Piedmont
Rifles. The show is one of the best
musical attractions on the road and the
performance will be well wort! the
price of admission. As the local mili
tary is to get the benefit of the perform
ance it should be w-ell attended and,
besides, the entertainment is all that is
claimed for it. All who attend will be
delighted with the superb music and
will at the same time be contributing
to the Piedmont Rifles, which is now
endeavoring to get in good shape.
