WAR NEWS IN BRIEF.
MONDAY.
Dewey’s report to the war de
partment that he had destroyed
eleven ships, silenced the land
batteries and took Cavite in the
Philippine engagement set the
country wild. President McKin
ley, in name of American people,
congratulated Dewey. It is re
ported that the Spanish cabinet is
falling. McKinley decides to push
war to a close. One regiment
Georgia troops ordered to Tampa.
Spanish cruiser touches at St.
Thomas. The Oregon arrives at
Bahai, Brazil. Spanish prisoners
arrive at Fort McPherson, Atlanta.
Camp at Griffin organized.
TUESDAY.
United States Squadron is re
ported off Porto Kiea. First ex
pedition to Cuba with arms and
ammunition sent to insurgents.
President authorized to promote
Dewey to Rear Admiral. Rioting
continues in Spain. Report that
Spanish fleet was near Porto Rico
untrue; it is new at Cadiz.
Sampson’s fleet will now turn their
guns on Cuba and Porto Rico, and
troops will at once be sent from
Tampa and landed in Cuba to re
inforce insurgents. Mob at Ma
nilla reported to have killed Span
ish Admiral Montejo and his two
sons. Montejo commanded Span
ish fleet in engagement with
Dewey.
AVEDNESDAY.
Relief stores are sent to Dewey’s
fleet at Manilla by cruiser Charles
ton. The Philippine rebel chief
has issued a proclamation to the
insurgents at Manilla to obey
orders of Commodore Dewey and
United States Consul Wildman.
Spanish torpedo destroyer is sunk
today at Algiers bay by premature
explosion. Admiral Sampson is
ordered back from Porto Rico but
may not get order before he re
duces land batteries there. Flying
squadron at Fortress Monroe may
be sent at once to Cuban waters.
Volunteers are stffl moving to
Camp Northen at Griffin where
Georgia troops are mobilized. It
is believed that return of Cape
Verde fleet to Cadiz is conclusive
proof that Spain has abandoned
all hope of effective resistence.
Invading army now at Tampa
ready to sail.
THURSDAY.
• Press reports today tell of an
engagement off Cardenas yesterday
between the United States Cruiser
Wilmington, the torpedo boat
Winslow and the auxiliary gun
boat Hudson, and Spanish gun
boats and land batteries. Five
Americans were killed outright,
and five others severely wounded.
The Americans were badly
worsted. These were the first
American lives lost in the present
war. Ensign Bagley, who was
killed, was from Raleigh, N. C.
United States gunboat Concord
sinks Spanish warship, off Iliolo.
General Merritt goes to Manilla
with strong army, and General
Wheeler to Cuba. Admiral Dewey
instructed to sweep away every
Spanish fortification in Philipines.
Regulars are being rushed from
Chickamauga to coast.

No damage was sustained by
Sampsons fleet. This is the sec
ond great American victory. The
Spanish cabinet goes to pieces, and

Have You a Post-office Box?
Editor Cracker; I desire to ask your
readers who live within delivery dis
tance of this office why so few ot them
have lock boxes in the postoffice? Why
are they willing to throw away any of
their time standing around the general
delivery ‘‘waiting for their turn to
get their mail to say nothing of the
unsightly surging of a mixed mass of
people often seen at our postoffice?
Transients, and persons seldom re
ceiving 1 mail, are excusable for “stand
ing in line” at the general delivery but
not so with at least one hundred per
sons who daily throw away their time
at that window. Persons who reside
here, and whose time is valuable seem
to care very little for it when they
consume so much of it at the general
delivery when fifty cents per quarter,
16 cents per month, % cent per day will
pay for a box and save all that stand
ing around. For fear that some of your
readers, patrons of this office, may
think that the postmaster gets the box
rent, permit me to say to them that
under the law, postmasters at an office
of this grade are required to furnish and
equip the office with all the boxes re
quired, at his own private expense and
yet the government gets every cent of
the box rent. The postmaster must
own and keep in repair all the boxes
but gets not one cent of the rent derived
from them. A strange law, but such is
the law. The only benefit resulting to
the office from a liberal course on the
part of the patrons is light work on
the young man at the delivery window.
There are now about fifteen per cent
of the Yale lock boxes in this office not
rented while in many cities the size of
this, there are four times as many boxes
rented as there are here. I desire to
bring this office “up-to-date and will
supply all the improved lock boxes or
keyless boxes needed but if the patrons
do not want them and will not rent
them, there would be no propriety in
my purchasing them. Box and drawer
rent has always been high here at this
office and after the dQ§e <?f this quarter
I will by authority from the depart
ment, reduce bo?c refit from 75 cents to
50 cents per quarter and the drawers
from SI. 25 to 75 cents per quarter.
Under this reduction there ought to
be one hundred more boxes rented in
this office than are now rented. I will
supply them if the patrons of the office
will rent them. Respectfully,
Henry P. Farrow, P. M.
