The Adjournment Of Congress.
The first session oi the Fifty-
fifth Congress has adjourned after
one of the most eventful sittings
in the history of the country. It
was during this session that the
debate on the Cuban question oc
curred. F Culminating at last in a
declarationfof war against Spain,
and the adoption of measures xor
carrying on the war. It was un
doubtedly the original purpose of
the present session to indulge in
debates on the financial question,
which the presidential election
had brought to the front, and to
scrutinize with merciless severity
the revenve producing qualities of
theDingley bill, which has fallen
so far short of the predictions of
its champions.
But, it soon became apparent
that war was the paramount ques
tion. Even the removal of the
disabilities of ex-confederates,
to the monotong of Cuban debate,
was auxiliary to the main ques
tion.
The session which has just 1 ad
journed will live in history as the
w r ar congress of this closing period
of the century. While there nec
essarily 7 has been a certain amount
of partisanship and the rule oi
Speaker Reed has been particular-
]y autocratic, the general harmony
v h: *h prevailed, under the inspi
ration of American patriotism,
liar been peculiarly gratifying-
The promptness with which Con
gress, in the first stages of the war,
voted $50,000,000 to be expanded
at the discretion of the president,
opened the eyes of foreign nations
not only to our own resources, but
to our unity whenever our com
mon country was threatened.
One of the most important meas
ures of this session came in the
very closing hours, when the sen
ate, by the vote of exactly two to
one annexed the Hawaiian islands
and thus adding another star to
the flag.
Congress will not take a long
recess. Unless extraordinary ne
cessities arise, the legislative body
will not be convened again until
the first Wednesday in Decern tor,
by which time the war with Spam
wall no doubt have been settled.
When it convenes again it ill
probably be its first duty to add
three more stars to the Old Glory.
—Augusta Herald.
What The Yellow Meant.
A governess who has charge of
three bright children had a sur
prise this week. She had explain
ed the poetical meaning of the
Stars and Stripes, how red stood
for war and glory, white for peace
and innocence, and blue for the
heavens and righteousness, and
one of the trio asked what was the
yellow of the Spanish flag repre
sented. Before she could reply,
No.’2 said, patronizingly: ‘‘Oh
that’s f o r billiouoiiees.”—New

Mrs. Smith—“What was it?”

Albany, Ga., June 5, 1897.
We know Mr. Harvey English to be a citizen of Dougherty Co.,

Mr. Harvey English has stopped a
very had leaking roof for us with his
English Paint. I recommend his paint
to any one who is troubled with leaky
roofs.
Georgia Cotton Oil Co., Albany Mill,
F. WHIRE, Supt.
Albany, Ga., July 13, 1895.
Mr. Harvey English painted the tin
roof on my house which leaked badly
in many places. I am well satisfied
with his work and the paint used by
him. JOHN D. POPE,
Attorney at Law..
Albany, Ga., Nov. 19, 18S5.
The roof painting done for me by Mr.
Harvey English has been and still i%
one of the most satisfactory jobs of
work which I ever had done. He
stopped all leaks in a large tin roof,
and there were a great many. His
whole transaction was fair, business
like and satisfactory.
Respectfully, A. W. MUSE.
