Bounties of our Seamen.
Washington, Julj’ 7.—Not glory
alone accrues to the men of Ad

destruction of Cervera ? s fleet, but
a considerable amount of hard

the attack our sailors receive $100

Flints Still in Use.
It may surprise you to hear that
in spite of the millions of modern
gnus and rifles nowadays turned
out the ancient flintlock is not
quite a thing of the past. There is
still in England at least one man
ufactory ot flints for this use. The
flints are all made by hand, being
placed on the operator’s knee and
»
chipped with a hammer to the
proper shape. Of course, a num
ber of these flints are used for fire-
making. These go principally to
countries like Spain and Italy,
where the duties are so high on or
dinary matches and wax matches
as to convert them from the abso
lute necessity they are in Great
.Britain to a positive luxury, so that
flint and steel are used.—New

As the law provides that all ves
sels within signal distance of the
action and in condition to render
aid share in the prize money, it is
likely that most of the fleet will
profit by the Spanish defeat. In
the case of the torpedo boat de
stroyers Furor and Pluton, which
were knocked to pieces by the con
verted yacht Corsair, the superior
force was on the Sparfish side;
therefore the bounty will be $200
per. capita for those on board the
destroyers. Probably the com
plement of the two ships was 135
men, making that bounty $27,000.
If it appears that any others of
Spanish vessels w T ere attacked and
destroyed by any of our vessels in
ferior in fighting pow T er, the award
in such case will be $200 -for each
man aboard those destroyed ships
also, and it may be that the final
bounty will be largely in excess of
$170,000.

With the memory of the Maine’s
disaster stamped indelibly upon
his thoughts he patiently waited
for the time to come when he
might eke out his vengeance upon
the Spaniards, and he did net
have to wait long. '
In the recent engagement at
Santiago Wainwright was in
charge of the little unarmored
yacht whiefi formally belonged to
Pierpont Morgan and which had
subsequently been christened the
Gloucester. Although she was
.not built for active fighting, her
gallant officer steered her right in
to the thickest of the fray, seem
ingly indifferent to the projectiles
which might have torn her into a
myriad of splinters. When the
immense cruiser,, the Vizcaya, un
dertook to quit the harbor she
pounced immediately upon that
vessel, and while-pelting it with
shot managed to avoid danger by
keeping underneath its huge guns.
Subsequently she became in
volved in deadly combat with the
Pluton and Furor, two torpedo
boat destroyers, with the result
that both of them -were sunk. |
Considering the frail mechanism j
and comparatively light arm-j
ament of the Gloucester, the part
which she played m toe bantiagojs,
•affair borders closely upon the
miraculous. Certainly it deserves
to rank among the most brilliant
feats of the war.
