Bra<?'*vjlie, lit : >■; es: “I had never
been sick a ddy in ray D f e until in 1390. I
get sc bad iih nervous prostration that I
had to give up and coiometice to doctor. I
tried our local physicians and one in Joliet,
but none gave me any relief and X thought
I was going to die. I became despondent
and suffered untold agony. I could not eat,
sleep nor rest, and it seemed as if I could
not exist. At tho end of six months I was
reduced to hut a shadow cf myself, and at
last my heart became affected and I was
truly miserable. I took six or eight bottles
of Dr. Miles' Nervine. It gave me relief
from the start, and at * t a cure, the great
est blessing of my life.

MILES K EPICAL CO Elkhart, Ind.
Henry Grady to Young Men.
Never gainbie. G: all the vices
that enthrall men this is the worst,
the strongest ami most msiduous.
Outside the immorality of it, it is
the poorest business and poorest
fun. No man is safe that plays at
all. It is easier never to play. I
never knew a man, a gentleman or
a man of business .who did not
regret t>ie time and money
wasted at it. A. mao who plays
poker is mint for any other busi
ness on earth.
Never drink. I love liquor, and
love fellowship involved in drink
ing. My safely has been that I
never drank at all. It is much
better not to drink at all than to
drmkalittl If I had to attrib
ute what I have done "n life to any
one thing I should attribute it to
the fact that I am a teetotaler.
As sure as \ on an born* it is the
best and safest .vay.
If you n ever drink and never
gamble and many-early, there is
no limit to the useful and dis
tinguished life you may live.
You will fcf the pride of your fa
ther's. heart and the joy of your
mother’s. I don’t know if there is
any happiness on earth worth hav
ing outside of the happiness of
knowing that you have done your
duty and tried to do good. You
try to build up. There are always
plenty of those who will do the
tearing down that is necessary.
You try to live in 'the sunshine.
Men who stay in the shade always
get mildewed.
Utilizing Waste Production.
After harvest there are Dumber-
! less articles of produce about the
farm for which there seems to oe
no good use and consequently they
go to waste. For instance, in the
vegetable garden there are small
green tomatoes, cucumbers, small
musk-melons, onions, etc., not
enough to take to market, perhaps
or possibly not quite up to the
market grade. All these things
will make good pickles for home
use during the winter if saved,
cleaned and put into urine as they
are gathered and taken out and
nut into vinegar when wanted tor
use. Then there are orenaro. iruits
more or less of which annually go
to waste but which ought to be
preserved or dried for family use.
In the vegetable garden, again,
there is more or less late green
stuff which it will pay to carefully
store for winter feeding of stock
and poultry when it will bring a
return much beyond its present
value.
Then there is the general result
from cleaning up which has no
salable value, but which will form
a portion of a compost heap and
can be returned to the land in a
year or tvro at most in the form of
a valuable fertilizer. These waste
products of the farm will often
mark the line between profit and
loss, and are w r ell worth consider
ing when fertilizing even by suc
cessful farmers.
THE FIEST HOUND BALE.
It has been on Exhibition in the
City for Some Days, and
has Attracted much
Attention.
Overwork, either physical or mental,
will produce weakness and loss of en
ergy*. Too many business or family
cares, overwork in the harvest £ cl cl, an
excess of woman’s work and worry will
produce months of miserv. To prevent
this the exhausted system should be re
inforced immediately. Dr. J. H. Mc
Lean’s Strengthing Cordial and blood
Purifier is an appropriate remedy.

New Petroleum Discovery.
A new source of petroleum has
been found in the Western Cau
casus, not far from the shores of
the Black Sea. The oil occurs in
large quantity, and the importance
of the discovery for European
consumers consists in the fact
that, as compared with Russian
petroleum, the long journey be
tween Baku and Batour will be
saved. The right of exploitation
is in the hands of a Moscow cap
italist. /
The first “round” bale of cotton
has been on exhibition on the floor
of the Cotton. Exchange for the
past few days, and while its neat
appearance is eften spoken of,
there seems little praise of more
substantial character. Capt.
Thomas Young, a \ recognized au
thority on cotton exporting, said
yesterday that the bale would not
do for the Trans-Atlantic trade.
The bale shown is from the press
of Col. Mike Brown, Barnwell,
and contains 856 pounds of cotton.
It is covered with heavy jute cloth,
the top, bottom and sides being
sewn with hemp cord. But, ac
cording to Capt. Young, it would
occupy more space in a ship’s hold
than a square compressed bale
weighing 500 pounds. Attention
was also called by several cotton
men to the fact that it was almost
impossible to get satisfactory sam
ples from the round bale. An end
sample was not desired, and to slit
th.e bagging would mean the burst
ing of the bale, a3 it carries no
hoops of any kind. It is said that
the round bale would occupy more
room in freight cars and would be
more troublesome to handle than
an ordinary put up bale, for the
reason that hooks could not be
used with any safety upon cotton
simply confined m cloth without
bands.—From the Sunday News,
Charleston, S. C., Aug. 14, 1898.

Marvelous cures of throat and lung
affections are made daily by Dr. Bulks
Cough Syrup. Miss Annie Swan,
Petersburg, Va., writes: “My brother
was attacked by a bad cough and cold,
and it was thought; he had consump
tion. Dr. Bull’s Cough Syrup was
used, and to our great sin-prise it made
him well and hearty. There is no
better cure in the world than this
Syrup.” Dr. Bull’s Cough Syrup is
sold everywhere for 25 cents.

One of the most novel methods
of hiding a dispatch from the en
emy is attributed to “Shorty”
Gonzales, an American scout at
Santiago* He was entrusted with
an important dispatch, and being
in danger of falling into the hands
of the Spaniards he put it into a
rubber tobacco pouch he had in
his pocket and forced his mule to
swallow it. He was captured, but
nothing being found upon him he
was allowed to go, and on his ar
rival at his place of destination
the mule was killed and the im
portant document was cut out by
a veterinary surgeon. “Shorty”
ought to be given a medal for his
cleverness.
