A banquet was on tapis last night by
the Red Men of the city. These affairs
are usually quite enjoyable.
Mrs. Elsie Davis died very suddenly
at her home two miles from the city on
the Athene road last Saturday, of pa
ralysis. The funeral was conducted by
Rev. Mel Kimsey at Oak Grove church.
M rs. Woolbridge and daughter, Miss
Clare, of Tampa, who spent the sum
mer at the Arlington and New Holland
Springs went to Atlanta Saturday to
remain a week or two before going
home.
Mrs. S. D. Glazener of Arlington,
Texas, accompanied by her daughter,
Mrs. Mary E. McMillan of Corleria,
Ala., stopped over from a visit to Brev
ard, N. C., this week with Mrs. W. H.
Campbell.
Col. S. C. Dunlap, Mr. James T. Dun
lap of Atlanta, and Misses Minnie and
John Dunlap leave to-night via the
Seaboard Air-Line for a trip to Wash
ington, where they will spend a week
or ten days.
Messrs. Waterman, Burnett £ Co.
will haye their opening in the Hogue
building October 1st. They are now
receiving and opening up their line of
clothing, shoes, hats and gents fur
nishings. They will give a souvenir to
each visitor at the opening.
Mr. John Hosch returned Saturday
afternoon from New York w T here he
spent two weeks buying the fail stock
of goods for Hosch Bros. &, Co. He

Lindsey Kowren, a white man, aged
forty-three years, met his death in
this city last Saturday morning in an
unexpected and somewhat peculiar
manner. He was an employee at
Walkers carriage shop and while at
work happened to an accident by
which three cf his fingers were cut off
by a planing knife, and his hand was
so badly torn up that the amputation
of two more fingers was made neces
sary.
Drs. Ham were called in and Howren
w as taken to their operating room at
their residence for the operation to be
performed. Chloroform was admin
istered to relieve the pain so that the
work could proceed without difficulty.
It is said that Howren had been drink
ing and being somewhat under the
induenee of liquor, the effect of two
upon his heart proved fatal and death
ensued in a short time.
Howren was an unmarried man and
resided with his brother-in-law, Mr.
Oliver Clark. He had lived in Gaines
ville for about six years and was well
liked by all -who knew him. The
funeral services were conducted by
R,ev. J. M. White. The interment took
place in Alta Vista cemetery.

Association Meets.
The Mulberry Baptist Association
meets with Union Academy church,
Jackson county near Winder, next
Friday. Several people from Gaines
ville will attend, and much interest is
felt in the association by the Baptists
of this city.

The firm of Martin & Hunt, one of

of this city, will dissolve co-partner
ship at an early date. They are now
winding up the affairs of the firm pre
paratory to closing out entirely. Mr.
J. H. Hunt will continue in business
here in the same lines as formerly, but
Mr. John H. Martin will go west, lo
cating at Kansas City where he will be
in the stock business. Mr. Martin ex
pects to leave for Kansas City between
now and the first of January.
Sonator Nominated.
The 33d Senatorial Convention met
at Gillsville last Saturday and nom
inated Hon. J. K. Thompson of Banks
for senator, it being that county's time,
under the rotation system to furnish
the nominee. Hon. R. E. Red wine of
Hail county represented this district in
the state senate the last term.
