a true report by Mr. Doc. Askin.
postmaster at Culloden, Ga., who
attended, and states further that
at the conclusion of the services
more than half the sisters were
unconscious from excessive shout

Opportunity of the
Republic.
There is no way in which the
supremacy of justice in the admin
istration of the law in France can
be vindicated more triumphantly
than by an order from the Court
of Cassation for the removal of
Dreyfus to Paris.
We speak of monuments “more
lasting than brass.” The brazen
monument is apt to be melted
into cannon, the marble to be
used for mortal. But in the Drey
fus case the triumph of absolute
justice oyer the prejudice of the
nation and the passion of the
hour would be an imperishable
monument to the true glory of
the French Republic and of its
courts.
The order for the removal of
Dreyfus should, follow the noti
fication to him that there is to be
a revision of his case.—New York

symptoms are pain in the head, dis

Maria Teresa a Total Wreck.
Washington, November 15—
The navy department today
ceived a cablegram from Captain
McCalla, dated Nassau, stating
that he had arrived at the scene of
the wreck of the Maria Teresa
with the tugs Potomac and Vul
can.
The first thing Captain McCalla
did upon setting foot upon the
deck of the Teresa was to hoist the
American flag. After a careful
examination of the stranded ship
and her situation upon the rocks
and a careful consideration of the
instructions from the navy de
partment, appreciating the great
interest taken by the nation and
government in the fate of the Ter
esa, Captain McCalla says he re
grets exceedingly to express the
opinion that it is hopeless to res
cue the ship. His opinion, he
says. 19 confirmed by such expert
engineers as Hobson, Blow, Cra-
van and Crittenden.
The vessel, is stranded in from
sixteen to twenty-one feet of wa
ter, and rests on a rocky reef. The
tide rises and falls in the ship be
low the protective deck. Captain
McCalla says he can best describe
the condition of the ship generally
by stating that she is “telescoped.”

the Moment of Totality.
Mrs. Mabel Loomis Todd, writing in
The Atlantic of an eclipse seen in Ja
pan, says: “Just before totality, to oo-
cur at 2 minutes after 3 o’clock, I wen'
over to the little lighthouse, taking
np my appointed station on the sum
mit, an ideal vantage ground far a spec
tacle beyond anything else I ever wit
nessed. Grayer and grayet grew the
day, narrower and narrower the cres
cent of shining sunlight. The sea fadec
to leaden nothingness. Armies of crows,
which had pretended entire indiflfer
ence, fighting and flapping as usual on
gables and flagpoles with unabated fer
vor, finally succumbed, and flew off
with heavy haste to the pine forest on
the mountain sidt% The French man-of -
war disappeared in the gloom, the
junks blended in colorlessness, but
grass and verdure suddenly turned
strangely, vividly yellow green.
“It was a moment of appalling sus
pense. Something was being wai ted for.
The very air was portentous. The flocks
of circling sea gulls disappeared with
strange cries. One white butterfly Ant
lered by vaguely.
“Then an instantaneous darkness
eaped upon the world. Unearthly night
enveloped all things. With an inde
scribable Gutflashing at the same sec
ond, the corona burst forth in wonder
ful radiance. But dimly seen through
thinly drifting cloud, it was neverthe
less beautiful, a celestial flame beyond
description. Simultaneously the whole
northwestern sky was instantly flooded
with a lurid and startlingly brilliant !
orange, across which floated clouds I
slightly darker, like flecks of liquid
flame, while the west and southwest
gleamed in shining lemon yellow. It
was not like a sunset; it was too som
