The Pugilist’s Profits.
<*. Mrs. James J. Corbett, who
ought to know, declares that there
is no such thing as a “gentleman
pugilist.” Very likely it is quite
true,* as she says, that no “prize
fighter can be a gentleman,” but
the evidence goes to show that, if
not a gentleman, a

WHEELER RETIRES,
jijjbting Joe Wheeler Leaves the
Army by the Age Limit.
f A recent dispatch from Wash
ington, says: Brigadier General
' Joseph Wheeler was placed on the
retired list of the regular army to
day by the age limit.
Few men have served under the
conntry’s flag and then fought
against it, only to again take ser
vice under it and fight gallantly
for it. “Fighting Joe”. Wheeler
was known by his men as a steam
engine m pantaloons.
In the civil war General Wheeler
was under fire in 800 minor en
gagements and commanded troops
in 200 battles. In the Spanish
war he was under fire at Las Gua-
simas, San Juan and El Cany.
General Wheeler was graduated,
from West Point in 1859. He was
born it Alabama. His daughter

convicted Bullock at his first trial

Miss Jewett Disappointed.
Richmond Dispatch (Dem.) :
We think Miss Jewett very much
wished to be threatened or attack
ed while here, but she was utterly
ignored by the whites, and was
quietly snhbbed by the colored
convention into which she intru
ded. It is true that she created
a' sensation and assembled a
crowd upon the sidewalks, in front
of the convention hall, but any
woman can do that, anywhere;
especially a young and fairly good
looking white woman, gifted with
brass and hysterical eloquence.
Recent outbreaks, growing part
ly out of race distinctions, seem
to indicate that France-is not the
only nation in which hysteria has
become more than a
sonal menace,

Paris, Sept. 8.—Fighting cyclo

coming frequent all over France.
Yesterday a terrific shower of bail
destroyed the vineyard crops in
Bordeaux, but the growers of
Sainte Milion, having been
warned by telegraph that the
storm was traveling toward them
immediately appealed to the mil
itary authorities. Five huge guns
were got ready and when the
towering black cloud came suffi
ciently near it was cannonaded
into shreds, which drifted away
harmlessly.—New York World.

Is William Bullock, now in the
Monmouth county jail at Freehold
N. J., charged with the murcler
of Policeman James Walsh of Red
Bank, a “hoodoo?” On Nov. 13
last he shot and instantly killed
Walsh while the latter was attenap-
ting to arrest him on a petty
charge.of malicious mischief.
Bullock claimed that Walsh
pointed a pistol at- him and said
he “would take him to Freehold,
dead or alive, and lock him up,”
when he demanded his constitu
tional privilege to give bail before
the nearest justice in Red Bank.
Bullocfcte story on this point was
partially proved by the state’s own
witnesses. The prisoner said he
shot Walsh while in fear of his
life and while resisting an attemp
ted illegal arrest.
Bullock has been three times tried
twice, convicted twice and sen
tenced to death, and his convict
ions have been twice set aside.
At his' second trial the jury disa

S T ow Bullock will have to be tried
again at the October term.
