He Spit in Bruin's Eye.
Jake Bradshaw, a woodman em
ployed in a lumber camp near
Williamsport, Pa., is a strapping
big' fellow and also resourceful.
The other evening—this is Jake’s
story—he was returning home
in^the assurance that some one
had been set to work to earn an
honest penny or two, pursue his
own and more dignified way.
A preparatory survey, resulting
in the discovery that' a part cular-

to the first person he saw passing,
“what would you take to clean
this walk?”

bear. They- clinched and rolled
down a hill until Jake, watching
his opportunity, squirted a mouth
ful of tobacco juice into bruin’s
eye, just which eye Jake dees not
know. Anyhow, the immediate
effect was that the bear let go and
the woodman was able to make
his escape. »

which fills her with terror. The
dread of childbirth takes away much
of the joy of motherhood.. And yet it
need not be so. - For sometime there
has been upon the market, well-known
