The New York World tells of this
remarkable case, in which a young
woman of that city narrowly es
caped a situation which would
h*ye given her trouble for life:
The engagement of Miss Lizzie
Rector, daughter of Mrs. Lizzie
Rector, of 100 Grand street; and
Dr. Thomas T. Wilkinson, dentist
having offices at Montgomery and
Warreff streets, Jersey City, has
been broken off. The young woman
discovered there * was a trace of
African blood in her intended’s
veins, and the match was .conse
quently, to her mind, undesirable.
Dr. Wilkinson is thirty years
old. When asked about the break
ing of his engagement, he said:
“Yes, I was engaged to;. Miss
Lizzie Rector. Oar engagement
is broken.”
When asked if it was true that
his fiancee had discovered there
was African blood in his veins,
hesaidi ; 1
“Yes, that was the cause of the
breaking of the engagement. My
parents were white folk, butgl haye
African blood in my vems from
my* grandparents. I have studied
hard-and built up a good practice.
I wae educated in the Presby terian
college of dental surgery and
^passed a highexaminutionfin the

colors, but I want to be honest and
truthful in all I do.
“I thought it was better that
Miss Rector should know the whole
truth now rather than wait until
after our marriage j for then there
would be great trouble for both of
us which could hot be so easily
righted as at this time. We loved
each other, but .under the existing
state of facts we had to break our
engagement, and that is the end of
it.” *
The racial instinct is .so strong
that it is hard to understand how
the girl could have made the Mis
take. There are shadings of color
sot slight that it sometimes takes a
second look to detect the mixture
of African blood, but to the Cau
casian its appearance is usually
unmistakable.
The fact that this mistake was
made in v oiie case shows that it.

Good gravel has so largely come- into

It is essential to restore a level surface,
as even the merit, speculative builder

frequently gets over this difficulty by
allowing urban refuse to be shot Into
the excavation; in many cases he even
exacts a small sum, for every load tilted

leveled, a year or two are allowed for
the soil to sink and become compact.

Sleep, my dear love, and be thy dreams of me!
Waking or sleeping, I still think of thee,
But dreams make present time of all the past;
