was intensely loyal to the white
race and the old company to
which he was attached for nearly
three-quarters of a century, the
Richland volunteers, carried his
name on its company roll and he
was an honorary member of Camp
Hampton, U. C. V. Though born
with a dark skin he carried a white
soul in his bosom and was honored
and respected by men from £ 11 over
the state, and they, though know

account of his age, will regret his
death and drop a tear to his mem

“A Thundering Price for Beans.”
A good many years ago, says a
writer in the St. Paul Dispatch, I
was connected with a morning
newspaper in an Illinois city, and
our custom was to go to the res-
tauraut in the railroad station for
our midnight lunch, that being
the only place at that time of
night.
There were three morniDg pa
pers, so quite a number of the
newspaper boys made the place a
rendezvous, and we used to sit
and talk over all the things that
had happened and a good many
things that had not happened.

The Color Line in the South.
The treatment of the negro in
