Well Nigh Won AH Honors.
The Byers family of Hall county has
become noted by reason of the great
record made at the N. G. A. college, at
Dahlonega, by the boys and girls of
that name who have been at school
there. Mr. P. J. Moran, of the Atlan
ta Constitution, recently visited the
college and wrote a history of their
work. The record was such a wonder-
derful one that a number of northern
and western papers copied the article
and used it as an illustration of “where
there’s a will, there’s a way.”
At the recent commencement the
Byers family had five speakers’ places,
two captaincies, one sargeant major
and one orderly sargeancy. In addi
tion to the above, Mr. J. H. Byers was
one of the champion debaters, and won
the debate for his society; Mr. J. R.
Byers won the mathematics medal;
Miss Jennie Byers won the sophomore
declamation medal, and Miss Cora Bj*
ers won the freshman declamation
medal! This is certainly a wonderful
record, and Hall county is justly
proud of its honored sons and daugh
ters. The above are children of Mr.
and Mrs. W. L. Byers of this county,
and brothers and sisters of Mr. Geo. G.
Byers of Gainesville.

| The Woman’s Best.
1 At the union mission meeting, helc.
at the First Baptist church, on the
fourth of June last year, the attention
of the ladies present was called to the
pressing need of an effort to he made
to provide in some way for the comfort
of the women and children from the
surrounding country. They frequent
ly had to spend the day in town on
business, and suffered for want of a
shelter or resting-place. After some
discussion, the chairman of the meet
ing, Mrs. Petty, appointed a committee
of two ladies from each church to meet
and formulate plans to such an end.
This committee met at the First Bap
tist church, June 19, 1900, and decided
to form themselves into an organiza
tion and elect officers, which was ac
cordingly done, said organization to be
called “The Woman’s Belief Associa
tion,*’ and elected as officers : Mrs. A,
Van Hoose, president; Mrs. A. W. Ir
vin, vice president; Mrs. T. Moreno,
secretary; Mrs. S. C. Shewmake, treas
urer.
After a few days, the ladies succeed
ed in renting a suitable house near the
square, for whieh the county commis
sion ers offered to pay the rent for one
year, the city promising to supply
wood and water. The Gainesville mer
chants, and also many other persons in-
town, generously aided by contribu
tions of needed articles, and a waiting
room was comfortably furnished and
thrown open, with a cordial invitation
to all who might wish to benefit by
this arrangement. Mrs. Gilleland was
placed in the house, to welcome visitors
and make them comfortable. Mr. Jno.
A. Smith, chairman of the board of
county commissioners, has been of
great help to the ladies, aiding and as
sisting them m every way.
