some who are displeased. ; The ques
tion has been agitated in this county
for several years and Judge Estes has
hammered away on it at every session
of court. It is the opinion of a major
ity of the grand jury, it is said, that it
is the best system for working the*
roads and it looks like now that they
will recommend its adoption by the
county. Whether it is the best solu
tion of the road question or not, no
one can deny that we need a better sys
tem in Hall.

■\ Fined by Mayor for Fighting, .
J. S. Davis, Jim Green and Joe Day is
were tried before Mayor Mitchell this
week for quarreling and fighting. On
the trial it developed that Green and J.
S. Davis had had some words on the
public square, and decided to, go out of
town and fight it out. They got as far
as Mr. J. W. Cox’s and went at it.
Some one came to town and notified Joe
Davis, who went immediately to the
scene, getting there just in time to see
Green strike his father. Joe forthwith
'knocked Grreen down, and, with the in
terference of others, stopped the fight.
J* S. Davis and Green were fined $5
each and costs. . The ease against Joe
Davis was dismissed.

Mr. Robert Davis Dead.
. Mr. Robert Davis, who lived in the
Duncan settlement, in the Southern
part of this county, not far from Maul
din’s Mills, while at work in the field
last Tuesday morning got overheated
and took a big drink of cold water. He
felt strangely after drinking it, and
went to his house, where he complain’ed
to his wife of being “very hot” and
begged her to fan him. . She did so,
but the inward fever increased, and he
was taken with profuse hemorrhage
at the bowels. He grew rapidly worse,
and after suffering the most excrucia
ting pain, died late that afternoon in
great agony,' His intermen t took place
Wednesday at Sardis Methodist church
burying ground, the funeral being con
ducted by Rev. F. G. Golden.
^ Mr. Davis was 58 years age, and
a widow and five children, the latter
all grown, survive him. Mr. Davis
was a brother of Mr. Sam Davis of this
county knd a brother-in-law of Mr. I.
