- Deputy clerk of the Superior
court W. B. Smith, Special bailiff
W. E. Smith and County solicitor
Fletcher M. Johnson, on Saturday
last jointly purchased a trunk,
filled with female gear at a sale
conducted by Constable J. S. La—
them, who had levied upon the
same for debt. They made their
purchase as the boys sometimes
trade jack-knives “un sight, un
seen,” and their bid of $2.15, being
the highest, put them in posses
sion of the trunk, a substantial
looking affair covered with tin,
and tightly bound together with a
stout rope. Each member of- the
pool was anxious to see the sort of
prize he had drawn, and the trunk
being carried into the clerk’s of
fice, the rope was untied and the
trunk opened. There was a tray
on top, and when, with trembling
fingers the deputy clerk lifted it
from its groove and set it to one
side, each now crowded over the
trunk to see what might be reveal
ed. The body of the box was fill
ed to the rim, and when, carefully
shaking out each garment as he
lifted it from the neatly packed
fill and spread it out upon the ta
ble, the clerk at last reached tie
bottom. He had a display of
dress goods, haberdashery, notions
and millinery that would almost
stock a country store. “The nig
ger that owned that trunk was cer
tainly a high-stepper and a high
flyer, judging from this harness?*
quoth the solicitor. “Why there
are shirtwaists enough in that pile
to uniform a regiment, and
skirts—I don’t see how the owner
J
ever found time to wear them. It
must have kept her busy, dressing
and undressing, to get around
once a year.” The other members
of the pool were jubilant;, and con
sidered their purchase a sure
enough bargain. When they at
tempted to pack the articles back
in the trunk, however, they were
stuck, for they were m the predica
ment of the amateur watch-repair*
er who finds when he starts to put
together again the watch he has
dismembered, that he can fill the
case up and still have wheels
enough left to make two or three
more watches. They filled the
trunk “crammed full” but there
was enough gear remaining over to
fill another trunk of the same size,
and their combined ingenuity has
so far been unable to get the goods
back in the condition in which
they found them. Meanwhile they
have tor sale a bargain assortment
of all sorts of female wearing ap
parel, which they will sell cheap
for cash.

here the man himself, who had

son of Mr. G. W. Walker, leaning
up against the telegraph post
trembling in every limb, and with
tears of fright m his eyes. “What’s
the matter,’Ford? demanded Mr.
Bell, seizing the agitated lad by
the arm. * “A man out there,” he
answered between his sobs “a
drunken man—choked me and
shook me.” He pointed at the
same me toward a corner where
a crowd of men were congregated,
and Mr. Bell started toward them.
The crowd started toward him at
;he same time, and the boy
jointed out one of them as his
assailant.. “That’s the man,” he
said and Mr. Bell demanded of the
fellow why he had disgraced his
strength and manhood by assault
ing a little boy. “I don’t think I
did it,” was the man’s cool re
sponse. “You don’t think you
did ?’J repeated Mr. Bell. “Well,
think a man ought to know
whether he did a thing of that
sort or not and—*’ But here he
was interrupted by the father of
ihe frightened lad, who pushed his
way forward through the crowd.
Mr. Bell, to prevent a scene, in
terposed, and the crowd from the
meeting coming up, Gen. Warner
crowded to the front and demand
ed what the matter was. Mr. Bell
explained, still with a heavy eye
on Mr. Walker, who was pretty
angry, and after a glance at the
supposed assailant, Gen. Warner
said: “I dont think it could have

During the progress of the citi

day night to consider the subject
of subscribing to the stock of the
proposed electric railway, there
was an interruption which scatter

spellbinding promoters, and nearly
broke up the meeting. One of the
speakers was tellihg why Gaines

shrill, sharp scream—evidently
boyish, for it had the semi-bass
major tones—and Clerk of the Su

and evil teachings—-the pastor or
