A New York man who served in
all the country’s wars and drank
and smoked all his life died the
other day at the old age of 101
But he was nev«r a hero.—Early

Secretary Gage hai purchased
$20,000,000 of bonds for the sink
ing fund since September 10th,
and announces that he will take
no more.
'The Ingredients.—“What did
you find on ‘that vessel which
washed ashore this morning?”
asked the Cannibal King of his
chief. “Only *a shipwreck shoe
maker and a case of sherry, sire.”
“ ’Tis well, slave. Make me a sher
ry cobbler for^dihher. I have of
ten heard of such a delicacy.”

During excavations in the river
Lea in England,, not dong ago, the
hulk of an ancient ship was found.
The lines of the hulk belong to a
period which makes the belief
plausible that the old ship may
have belonged to the fleet with
which King Alfred the Great
fought the danes.
* She-—You say the little blue
flag you hoist on your yacht is an
“absence” flag?
He—Yes, we hoist that when
we want it * understood w$ are
“Not at home.”
No, Maude, dear, in spite of all
sorts of bargain sales we cannot
tell you where you can get rates
in surgical operations.
Advance sheets of* the intro
duction to “Popr’s* ’ Maoual for
1901 have just been issued.
There was an increase in railway
milage during the year of little
more than 3.500 miles, bringing
the total milage completed on De
cember 31, 1900, up to 194,521
miles. The advance sheets show
an increase in gross revenue of
over $65,000,000, and a gain m
airplus of $24,000,000.
A girl with blistered lips can
tell any amount of reasons how it
happened but she can’t tell why
ahe looks guilty when she is tell
ing them.
And so it appears that those
now famous “last words” of Pres
ident McKinley were, as a matter
of fact, arbitrarily selected by Dr.
' Mann, one of his physicians, as
“the mpst«appropriate to be re
membered.”' An hour after Dr,
Mann had selected these “last
words” and written them down,
• the dying President had some futb-
,t er conversation with his wife, and
SH e/en later tha:: that gave utter
ance to words and sentences. But
the inscrutable Dr. Mann had
|pide his selection, and it had to
stand. The sentiment in the re
cited “last words” is pure and
hily, and there is no doubt that
fciat sentiment remained with the
dying man until his latest consci-
oisness. But according to Dr.
Minn himself the President said
ouch after “Good-bye, all; good
bye. It is God r s way. His will
i )t ours, be done.” The words
quoted “were the most appropri
ate to be remembered as his last
*>rde,” hence they were written
oiDr.1 Mann’s prescription pad

That is tlje sum Dr. Flower of
Pittsburg has asked the court to
award him from the estate of the
late Henry M. Curry. Mr. Curry
was one of Mr. Carnegie’s part
ners. Dr. Flower says he was af
flicted with a pernicious disease
which was likely to prove fatal
at any time. This disease the
doctor says he held in check for
some time—long enough at least,
for Mr. Curry to add $1,000,000 to
his wealth. He thinks, therefore
that his charge or $25 per visit

of his time to the patient, is not
excessive.—Savannah News.

Hi
There arrived in New York the
other day from France six cases
of large bronze eagles. The
eagles are to be set up on the bows
of new United States war vessels.
So far as could be ascertained by
an inquisitive reporter, the rea
son the eagles were ordered from
France is that they can be pro
cured s cheaper there. American
foundries can make as good eagles
as, if not better than, the French
product; but American workmen
get $4 a day for such labor while
the French get only $1.50. Here
then, is a govenrment claiming
to be devoted to the protection of
the American workingman, lay
ing enormous duties against im
ported articles for his sake, aud
at the same time sending to France
for its war ship figureheads mere
ly because they are a little cheap
er there than at . home.—Savan
