In one of the, numerous sieges Hamburg was reduced to the last extremity, when it was suggested that all the children should be sent out unprotected into the camp of the besiegers as the mute appeal for mercy of the helpless and the innocent.- This was done. The rough soldiery of the inves- *v * -. ting army saw with amazement, and then with pity, a long' pro cession of littfe ones, clad in white, come out of the city and march bodily into their camp. The sight melted their hearts.' They tb rew down their arms, and plucking branches of fruit from the neigh boring cherry orchards they gave them to the children to take back to the city as a token of peace. This was a great victory which has ever since been commemora ted at Hamburg by a procession of boys and girls, dressed m white and carrying branches of the cher ry tree in their hands. The Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of A pretty Chicago girl, who adds to her other attractions the fact that she is an heiress, has been shipped out of Berlin and back home by a heartless guardian. The maneuver was caused by the attentions of a young man, not considered in the family councils, an at all desirable “parti.” He had followed his lady love to Berlin and she seemed to appreciate this somewhat extraordinary devotion. Now he is said to be in tears and prepared to acknowledge that if love can “laugh at locksmiths” it still must pay reasonable atten tion to the abilities of the ocean liner. However, the berths on vessels plying between Hamburg and New York have not been all taken; Dyspepsia Cure Digests what you eat. The Kind You Have Always Bougfrt Signature of A tunnel, which had taken a week or more to complete, was run from the rear of the building and a hole was then drilled through the steel bottom of the wholesale stamp vault. There were 97 small holes around the square plate cut out and some of the drilling looked several days old. The stamp vault was only six feet away from the cashier’s vault, which contained over $300,000 in cash. The latter evidently # had been the objective point. So carefully had the job been planned that the men working in other parts of‘the building had not the slightest inkling of the daring robbery being worked al- jnosfc under their noses. *T tobacco si>rr and SMOKE Your Life away! It fol lows: “Whqn reading the account of the sad death of Mr. McKinley I noticed the*figures of the dates of his birth, the death and the age of the late president, and also the figures of the birth and the pres ent age of Mr. Roosevelt, the )resen t president were - yery pec u- iar. - Mr. McKin ley was born in 1843. Mr. Roosevelt succeeded Mr. McKinley at the age of 43 ; Mr. Roosevelt was born in 1858; Mr. McKinley died at the age of 58. Now, if we add the two ages of the late and the present presi dent together and add 1800 for the 19th century, in which they were born, we shall have the date of the death of the late president.” There was trouble in the county jail at New Brunswick, N. J., the other morning. On the preceding night some ingenious individual smuggled a quantity of ^whiskey j into the jail and in the morning which chanced to be that on which divine services are regularly held, the majority of the prisoners showed up m an advanced Btage of intoxication. One of the more bibulous prisoners overturned the well-meant efforts of the sheriff, to convince the party of good wo men who had come to conduct prayers that all the inmates of the •jail were ill, by inviting one of the visitors to come Over to his cell and permit him to chuck her under the chin.
